99 tourer about 21000 miles on her ....
Took a little ride yesterday, bike ran great was racing around with my buddy on his cbr900 was a bit cold but we trudge on ... Any ways a few times we got up over 100 mph and I noticed a terrible high speed wobble with both hands on the bars.... Have not done anything recently to change anything put a stinko on the front a week before the dragon round up ride ? Have had it up to those speeds since with no problem.... What do y'all think ? Wheel bearings, neck bearings, tire, maybe forks ? Help me out guys I like to go fast .....

I'll wade in with the obvious.

When you put the new tire on, did you use stick on wheel weights to balance?

If so, you might have thrown one.

Put the bike on the side stand and jack the front wheel with a jack under the engine and check the steering head bearings for a sticky spot near the center of travel.  One of my valks did the same thing @ 100 mph. Replacing the bearings corrected the problem. Coulc also be tire related.

I very seldom reach those speeds, but when I do the bike is smooth as "glass" because of Dyna Beads. Also, I'm no fan of Shinko tires. FWIW

The first thing to check is that the tires are properly inflated.
With the colder weather, the tires loose air pressure rather rapidly.

I would always suspect the front tire, first. (esp if only at hi speed)

Maybe pressure, maybe balance, maybe tread irregularity, bent rim, possibly a bearing (doubt it).

Some have had a wobble from worn shock bushings in back (doubt it if only over a 100).

Head bearing?

I've had a bit of nastiness at higher speeds with bad road, bumps, and cross winds combining to get the front end shaking/wiggling/bouncing.

May have found my problem
the bolts for my windshield were so loose the shield would move forward and back an inch or so haven't gotten it back "up to speed" but I'll bet this had some factor ????

That definitely could cause a wobble at high speed!  Hope that was it.  Undecided

Shocked          cooldude            99 tourer about 21000 miles on her ....
i'd be guess'in its the stinko tire ...  Roll Eyes
nothing better to spend your money on than a good set of tires          coolsmiley
good  motorcycle tires are not cheap ...
I ride the elite3 and keep 46-48 lbs of air in'em ... they last a lot longer         Cool
my oem windshield would flutter like crazy at 100 mph ... it  made me wonder if anyone had ever been decapitated by a broken motorcycle windshield       Undecided

Three bikes

« Reply #17 on: January 06, 2014, 04:37:12 PM »

On a late September ride back from Maine, my bike developed a terrible wobble.  It was about an hour into the ride and the temps were down in the high 30s.

I was leading so just kept calm as I assessed the situation.  It only took a minute to realize that my ass, literally, my ass was shaking so bad from the cold that it made the bike seem like it was shaking.  HAHAHA

Any chance the cold got to ya?

Lots of time a wobble at high speed can be attributed to a

DEATH GRIP

Need to slow down when that occurs.
