Cry  A friend (still in the hospital, awaiting a 2nd surgery) totaled their Interstate last Thursday.  Progressive declared it a total, demanded it be immediately taken from the dealer to a salvage yard (they would not pay any more storage charges) and wanted her to accept $3,750 as full settlement!!!!!!!!

This is a 2000 red/blk Interstate, immaculate with just 30K on it!

I personally (with her permission) took the bike from the dealership to my house for storage.

There's no way I'll let her give them the title for that kind of money.

When Queenbee had her accident, they paid $6,000 to fix the bike, no questions asked.

If this is the way they handle a total, my four bikes are outta there.

I'm even considering contacting whatever insurance commission and complain about the settlement offer, and the heavy-handed treatment she received while in serious condition in the hospital.

Anyone else have a total with progressive?

Walt, now you know why I left them 4-5 years ago. Maybe even longer, can't recall exactly without looking it up and not sure I even have any records left. Tried GEICO for one year, dropped them also and went with Markel. Been there ever since, full coverage plus some extra due to mods runs me around $268/year. Paid off in a flash when I had my first thump ever last February, first one in well over 50 yrs. of riding. The gal I worked with at the insurance company joked with me, said she hoped I got it out of my system now.

Sorry to hear about your friend, hope she comes out of it ok.

She should be able to request that they find a replacement vehicle of similar year, make and model and only pay the deductible. Suggest you go ahead and remove any personalization that won't be noticed. I went this route with a truck a few years ago when they were trying to short change me.

Well Kingbee I have Dairyland and have been very happy with them.
Here are some examples that I have had with them:
totaled 1984 Goldwing in 2001, they paid me $3000.
Got rear-ended on my 2000 Interstate in 2003 and they totaled it, they paid $13,500 and what they told me is that they use the "Kelly Blue Book" and then check with local dealers in area to see what they are selling for, if more then "Blue Book" they go in between. (I was also able to remove all extras that were not damaged, including a 45 min. old set of Mark T's
Had my 1999 Interstate rear ended also, but not as extensive damage (scratch on exhaust pipe, scratch on bag rail, dent on front engine guard. None were bad enough to warrant replacement, paid me over $1600.
Rates were never raised. Just paid premium $335.52
Coverages:
20,000/40,000 bodily injury
15,000 Property Damage
Actual cash value of bike up to 40,000 + 3000 in extras 250 deductible
Uninsured motorist Bodily injury 20,000/40,000
Only bad item is I have no coverage for passenger, but I rarely have one

My insurance company paid that much for a fender fork tubes windshield and fuel tank! NADA and such don't reflect true market values on niche vehicles like the Valkyrie. I had a friend who had a auto salvage yard and had a contract with some insurance companies that required him to pay 20 percent of the book value on totaled vehicles. If that still holds true Progressive would get back most of their payout. By the way I have Dairyland too.

My son, James, let his younger brother use his sport bike while he was out of country. Big mistake. Chris laid it down, looked like minor damage to me, Progressive, totaled it and gave him more than he had in it. Only problem is now he has another bike and premiums are more than double because of the total. He should've had them repair it.

It's a shame though that her agent is dealing with her that way. Sounds like it may be the agent. I've had to deal with Progressive on two totals and they gave more than what I would have figured.

I have heard like stories on Progressive.

Ask for a new adjuster, but don't let her settle anything or sign anything, especially while she is down. Get estimates on repairs, it can probably be fixed, if not you are in for a battle (it's already in the computer).

It's all a negotiation and the burden of proving the value of that bike is on her. It can be accomplished.

Sometimes they shoot you a low ball figure just to see if you will jump at it. The longer it goes on, somebody's boss will get involved, wonder why it's not been settled and then they will start thinking about injuries, lawsuits and the like. I wouldn't accept a penny less than $10,000 for it minus her deductible. Good Luck on it!

Steve(Old Skool) had his Valk with Progressive and it was totaled. They wanted it taken to one of their salvage yards because of the fees and we asked about buying it back for the parts and he would not even discuss it. The agent was rude.

Not a Valk but a V65 Magna.  I was hit on a poker run by a guy not paying attention.  I had to fight and fight with Progressive to get a fair price.  They offered way below Kelly Blue Book. Fox Valley Cycles wrote a letter for me, telling Progressive that they had just sold a V65 for way more.  They also told them that mine was in much better shape.  I asked why I was treated so bad, thier guy hit me.  No answer.

They would be my last choice for insurance.

progressive paid more than I paid for the bike in 2003 or 2002 I forget which year it was    I had enough to buy my 01 interstate with 3k on it.  The oo interstate had almost 20k at the time.

but they doubled the premium for a year or so

Insist on a supervisor lookin over the case, your adjuster is not being fair

My bike was totaled by progressive. I came out very well. You've already done the key thing, you've got the bike. Print out a bunch of papers showing what another bike will cost. Print out a sheet for EVERY accessory. Don't forget tow bills, storage bills and what. Don't forget to add sales tax on the next bike.

I know of two others that had the same success as myself with Prog.

p.m. me if you want to know how much they paid me (think big).

My rates did not increase, accident forgiveness on the first wreck, I love my Progressive.

My '99 Tourer was under 4 feet of water after Katrina. Could not have asked for better service from Progressive. They totalled it and paid me more than I had in it. If it happened today considering the age of the bike (another '99 Tourer) it would be substantially less.

Progressive paid well on my I/S.  They went by replacement cost + extras on the bike.  Ended up getting more than I paid for it - and this was after them deducting 1300 because I kept the bike.  The premiums went up for a year, but it was nothing too bad.  My experience was positive all the way around.

Most Insurance Co. will "feel them out" with a low ball offer. You need to have your ducks in a roll as to market value, replacemant cost, availability, ECT. When they give a low offer, say please replace with a like unit. They don`t want to spend the time to do this, most Agents are lazy and will take the path of least trouble. NEVER take the first offer unless it is in outerspace. Only you can diecide. You can work Ins. Co. just like they work you. Good luck !!!! cooldude

Thanks ya'll, i wasn't expecting such a low-ball offer, but I already planned on changing the game to hard-ball.  It's just that it was so low, and so forceful and abusive to a person on morphine, who didn't even know what day it was.........

I'll get her a decent settlement
