I would think the bulb is bad. At least I would start there. Might check the fuse connections and other connections along the way. You didn't say if Interstate or Standard/ tourer, as the Interstate has relays in the OEM wiring, and the others do not. Just start with a new bulb and connections in the headlight area cooldude

I think you'll find that you have a bad connection getting hot.Bulbs either work or they don't.I'd check the lightbulb holder first and be sure the bulb is making a solid connection or if the holder has burnt spots on it from a loose connection.

If your Valkyrie is a Standard or Tourer, it could be your hi/low switch needs cleaning.  If you're so inclined, take apart the switch to clean it, or try giving the switch a good blast of contact cleaner through the gap around the edges of the rocker.

Are you using a higher wattage bulb? If so, then as mentioned it may well be your headlight socket starting to go bad(melt). Go to NAPA and get the one used for such applications and not worry any more.

Pretty unclear but, if your saying turn off from a running condition

to a stand still, sitting condition, it would seem to me that your

alternator may be failing. That and possibly a poor battery condition.

Mainly though I think it's more likely the alternator.

Napa sells 2 sockets that work. Get the HeavyDuty one. It won't melt.

Actually bulbs do lose brightness  with age, and on occasion a hanging filiment can even cause a intermittent condition.
Not that I think thy is the problem here, just saying.

Maybe your idle speed is too slow.

I mean, hey come on, the bulb gets brighter when you shut it down.

YEAH I KNOW. I THINK SOMEONE WAS JUST TAKING A SHOT AT ME. ACTUALLY YESTERDAY I CHECKED THE BULB CONNECTION AND EVERYTHING LOOKED GOOD. NOTHING BURNED. IT MAY HAVE NOT BEEN PUSHED ON ALL THE WAY. I DID THAT AND WENT FOR A SHORT RIDE AND GOT BACK AND THINGS SEEMED OK.  WILL TRY A LONGER RIDE SOON FOR THE ULTIMATE TEST.
