Hi guys, How much cupping is acceptable on these rear tires? I'll be doing a rear diff service and splines in a couple of weeks, I know I don't feel any vibration at this point and time, just curious....

None!  Keep the air pressure up to 42-44 and they shouldnt cup at all.

+1 What Jeff said.  I keep 42 front and 45 rear.  I'll probably replace mine due to age before I replace them due to wear.

Has not been my experience at all. I run that pressure(check it regularly) and they cup I don't run them anymore. I have never had good experience with DE3, I have one on my standard now but only because that is what the shop in NC had while I was on a trip with a 16d nail sticking out of my Avon Angry

If I remember right, before I put it away, It looked like it was cupping. Being an auto tech, I wouldn't allow this on my clients cars. Being a newbie in the bike world, Just needed to know what was normal,or, not. If it is cupping, it will be replaced.......

I've never had a rear tire of any brand that wasn't cupped and vibrating in turns by 7000 miles. They all were kept at above 42 psi. I think it is partially because of the straight roads and black tops in IL. The tire wears on the center leaving the edges to distort. I'm taking off the Metzeler with 6800 because I can't take the noise anymore. It would probably go another 1000 to 2000 miles but it isn't worth the irritation. Going to a Michelin Commander II "Bias" ply and see what happens.

I always run 42-44 lbs and have cupping on my DE3 on the rear. I'm going back to Avon as I really don't like anything about the Dunlops.

Cupping does not make a tire inoperable nor unsafe.

It is nonsense to simple toss a tire because it is cupped.

Try different pressures to mitigate the aggravating features and ride it.

Normal inspection of the tires for wear is recommended.

It's amazing how some would suggest to trash the tire, but easy to

understand since it is your money they suggest you to spend.

I really love the replies for this. Everyone has a different thinking behind their reason. There is no noise or vibration at this time with the tire, that's why the question was thrown out there!

I won't get rid of the tire but ride it til it is worn out unless it affects handeling .

All I run are the E 3's.  I run 41 lbs front and back. I check my pressures weekly and consistently average 18,000+ miles front and back. The centers wear flat and the outsides do cup, but that does'nt bother me. I ride about 13,000 miles a year so I only get about a year and a half out of each tire.
Love my E 3's cooldude
And by the way; I replaced the drive shaft at about 100,000 miles after all the splines ground off. (Lack of maintenance and lubrication) I just replaced my back tire and re-lubed everything. I think I remember the Mfg recommends maintenance every other tire change. That seems to work well for me.
You have to find what works for you.
Keep the rubber side down. coolsmiley
