I bought a valkyrie that was sat up for 5 to 6 years. The motor was stuck fixed that still have carbs to do waiting on parts and now working on gas tank. I washed it out with dawn and i'm getting big flakes of scale but not rust . The magnet will not pick up any of this stuff. Every time i wash it more comes out so is there any thing else i can use .
Thanks Dennis

On an old Triumph tank I had, we used a bunch of loose nuts and a small chain.
We put (can't for the life of me remember tha name of the stuff) in and let it soak overnight, the next day everytime we walked by the tank we would pick it up and shake it for like 30 to 45 seconds and put it back down.
At closing time, we shook it for like 5 minutes and then drained it out of the filler hole. All kinds of crud came out.
We filled it up again with the nuts and chain in it, let it soak Saturday and Sunday. Monday noon, we shook the hell out of it and dumped it, we got more crud that time than the 1st time.
We kept tis procedure up for 2 weeks. Finallt we washed it out with HO soapy water and we got like 1 or 2 small pieces of crap.
Dried it out with an airline, put the petcock on it and installed it on the Little Triumph racer my daughter raced. She ran it for 4 years, and we sold the bike to a guy in MT. Last I heard, he is still racing that tank on a bike or 2.
He said he has had no problems with crud in the bowls, or carb.

RJ I think i'm going to put some s/s nuts in the morning that I can keep track on how many I put in and for some strange reason I don't get them all out I will not have them in there rusting.
Bighead I did go to that site before I started this and that why I used hot water and dawn. I don't have any rust just a black scale That's why I thought there might be some thing else I could use to eat that crap up
Thank y'all for your help Dennis

If you think it may be organic substance inside the tank, a good cleaner is DRAINO.
Put some (multiple tablespoons) in there with water and shake and let it sit for a day or more.
That stuff is powerful and it will amaze you at how good it works.
If the gas was ethanol enriched, the chances are good that all that crud IS organic.

With all those cleaners mentioned, I would take some precaution to protect your paint. FWIW.
