Bought a '80 Gold Wing up in Tallahassee last week and am trying to get her running.  Soooo many things were/are wrong with it so I'll just itemize the problems I've found and/or fixed.  (If this is against forum rules please delete this thread.)

1.  Plugs were gapped too close…..regapped
2.  Fuel filter very old and installed backwards flow…..new filter
3.  Replaced lower radiator hose
4.  Reworked fuel pump by resurfacing check valve surfaces
5.  Vaccum advance popped…….purchased used one…To be installed
6.  Plug wire insulators cracked/broken…..to be purchased
7.  Removed fairing and false fuel tank.
8.  Inspected fuel tank for rust and debris…..No rust and clean
9.  Cell checked battery and trickle charged to full charge
10.  Adjusted all valves…..some were too tight
11.  Fuel pet rooster sucking air…. need new o-rings
12.  Removed rear lights and trunk…. may/not use them again (ugly)

Things I know that need attention or repair.

1.  Replace vacuum advance and will probably have to remove engine.  Some say it can be done by removing cross-member but easier just to drop engine. (?????)
2.  Find speedo cable
3.  Go over wiring.  Lots of wiring add-ons and garbage connections
4.  Sync all 4 carbs, which were rebuilt by former owner.
5.  Clutch hard to pull
6.  Right bank is smoking…..rings, seals or ?????
7.  Check front and rear brakes.  Front inop
8.  Paint everything, re-chrome, polish metal
9.  Install new thermostat…none installed

Will update as I go along.  My poor unridden Valk has been sitting for the last couple weeks while I play with her older  sisters.

I'd want to turn it into a naked wing....but don't know if that's possible with that model wing.

I did a web search and there are lots of them that have been made into Cafe/Bobber style moto's.  I like the larger rims on this one versus the '77.  Thinking the '80 is the one to convert and put all the accessories in storage should I ever want to put it back stock.

Lots of stuff going on there Ron. Save and sell everything you take off of it that you won't use again. Somebody will want it guaranteed. I'm with BF on the naked wing look. I know nothing about them but I love that look.

SO I posted twice to this thread and neither of them show up . Am I invisible ?

Thats wierd .  SO I'll try again .

First off I think you have a nice base to work from .  I dont know the seller or the bike ,but i recall the sale listing . I believe he post here at times and I see him on a wing site .
The 1100 is a very dependable bike if its had routine maint.
I think he said the brakes are rebuilt. If done correctly with good parts you might only need a proper bleeding , as the wing is known to be a PIA to bleed .
Smoke from the right side ? Blue,Black , White ? If he installed a factory exhaust from an 83 at least it should have a crossover pipe . So the smoke could be from either side . The 4s are known for blue smoke from the left bank when parked on the sidestand .
I didnt know cause I havent looked for a vacuum advance that its available . I'd bet most 1100s on the road have bad diaphrams in the advance . They seem to run just fine that way . The service manual says to remove the rear wheel and swing arm to replace it . Might be just a simple to remove the engine.
Best of luck with returning her to the highway . See ya down the road .

I would really like to get it running properly before tearing everything down.  I think I'm going to try and replace the vacuum advance before pulling the engine.  Reason being I want to know condition of clutch, tranny, engine and final drive so I don't have to pull engine twice should there be a problem.

Here's the one off the other engine that came with the purchase deal.

Here's a pic of my fully equipped "shade tree" shop! LoL  Think I should move it to the back yard near my little machine shop.  Sold the BMW to make room for the Goldwings and Valkyrie.

Yes I do ride.  I go almost everyday somewhere except when it's raining.   Haven't ventured very far just maybe about 50 mile radius of Tampa.  Been as far as down to Sarasota and North to Ocala.  Last couple weeks I've been busy with the these two Goldwings I bought and hunting.  As close as we are you could come visit or I could come visit you!  I do go to "Biff's Burger's" in St. Pete often.

Here's a really good link to your situation: http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13133

I DD an 82, 130 miles a day.
It has an 83 engine (true OD 5th).

I would absolutely replace the timing belts if you don't know their age.

Personally, I'd pull the heads, lap the valves, new stem seals/HG/O-rings.

I'll see if I have a speedo cable, I may not. I do have an 82 snail.
I have a pile of parts if you need anything else, including 2 old engines, rear fender, stock handlebars, etc.

WHAT COULD IT BE??  Got a few minutes this afternoon to check on the hard to pull clutch lever.  Removed the cable from the clutch arm and the clutch cable is not kinked or binding.  Please don't tell me that I'm gonna have to crack open the clutch/tranny portion!  Does it have a hydraulic release bearing assembly?  (Dang, I just gotta get a repair manual or two!)

Found out it might be easier just to pull the engine than remove rear tire and swing arm.

Ron, it's cable actuated but if it sat for a while it might just need a good lube job. Plus, the actuator lever down below may be binding. I'd sure check all that out before pulling anything apart.

Wog (From another forum) came over this morning to look at my '77 and '80 GW's. After balancing the carbs on the '77 it idles and runs great. Here's the thread on the '77 viewtopic.php?f=16&t=51389

We tried to balance the carbs on the '80 Interstate but not much luck until I get the vacuum advance replaced. The carbs were very close though of the vacuum indications we able to get even if it wasn't running that great.

The clutch lever, and the pivot, seem to be in good condition.  It's getting kinda of tuff working on two projects at once.  Think I'll put my efforts into this '80 model and let the '77 project slide for awhile being it running.

Spent yesterday cleaning my back raised up patio, cement pad, of all the junk that has accumulated.  Should make a good work area.  It also has a 10'x10' pop up shelter over it.  Not the best work area but it will work just as good as the one on the driveway.  Still a few things to get rid of and then clean the cement.  Some of the 3rd world countries I've been, this would be a work area to be only dreamed of.  LoL

Just had a wake up call about "what I believe is a bad business!" Took my timing belt covers to a Chrome refinisher, here in Tampa, and the guy told me it would cost about $500 to re-chrome one set of covers. I said thank you very much and left. I just bought a brand new set for $58 with no exchange and free shipping!

Look what else I found behind the "log cabin dog house" when cleaning up. This will definitely come in handy. Might be the best $20 yard sale item I bought about two years ago. (Never used it yet and needs a bottle jack. Harbor Freight here I come! LoL)

Just got my new timing valve and it's really nice.  The picture doesn't do it justice.  I just ordered another for the '77 GW I bought.

Wish I could finish up the '77 GW so I can go to work on the '80 Gw.  Been trying to find an elusive clunk somewhere in the drive line.  Yesterday I put on another final drive and still has same clunk.  Splines on FD and coupler are in good condition.  Going after the output shaft dampener next as suspect but I have a nagging ferar, in the back of my mind, it may be a clutch dampener plate in the middle of the clutch pack.  When I get this clunk gone it will be on the back burner for restoration then I will put my efforts into the '80 GW.  With all this maintenance going on I think my Valk is getting lonely for a ride!  LoL

No bags came with it and today I took off the mount for them and installed rear turn signal lights.  Had to make attachment bolts so I could use the stock seat hand rail.  Drilled hole in longer 2" bolts for wires and milled slot in tube so they wouldn't slip and turn.

Almost finished with the '77's mechanical/electrical issues.  Won't start painting till later though.  She really runs good except of the "clunk," which I think is the final output dampener.  It's tolerable until I pull the engine and start the painting and polishing of everything.  Went by a powder coating place and said he would sand blast and powder coat it for $220.  Don't know if that's a good price or not.
