Never had it done but I'm guessing you hit it-remove EVERYTHING. Others have done it and I'm fairly certain they will chime in. What color are you planning on?? RIDE SAFE.

I have a powder coat shop next to my shop that does a lot of work for me. You will have to remove everything and degrease it. The powder coat shop will sandblast and coat your wheels at 400 degrees.

Is 400 degrees hot enough to damage aluminum?

It won't damage it, not for the short period of time it will be at that temp.  If left at that temp for extended period of time you could get some precipitation hardening depending on the alloy content.  They powder coat them all the time.  Be careful you don't damage the new coating mounting your tire.

There is an chromish color and when coated with clear powder on top of that it kinda looks like polished aluminum, almost chrome. I had some...well, some claw feet done for my bathtub.

So far, not a mark on them, the guy I go to for tyres is ultra careful and hasn't marked the rims at all..the wheels were done about 2 n half years ago, we get lots of salt and stuff on the roads here and they are still as good as new....

Wow..... Was the inside of those rims done as well?   I have never seen a cleaner or shinier rim inside in my life.  Those look very nice.

Yep, inside of the rims done as well...I was very pleased with the job. A bit more expensive than a standard colour. Each wheel cost me £80 so about $125 each to get done...
