Side stand crossmember bent???

Lick when I bounced down on steel culvert bent (rolled back) the crossmember on my '99 I/S. Saw Big BF's repair where crossmember was cut out and replaced but wondered if anyone has had experience trying to bend it back. Have my Valk at a local body shop and he suggested trying tying bike down and hydraulically bending (rolling) it back into position where stand will be functional. Thoughts?

Should work as far as getting into position, but it probably wont be strong enough to leave it like that.  If he gets it straight I think Id have him weld a piece of strong angle iron across the top and front edge.......you may need longer side stand mounting bolts but at least it would be strong

  Definitely needs to be reinforced after its straightened.

You know about metal fatigue? Bending it back and forth, and you can end up breaking it.

Is this something you will be paying to have fixed, insurance, or ?

Personally, I would bend it back, Once only. If I was to ever hit it again, and bend it, I would do the proper repair. I don't feel the job is too hard, but time consuming and requiring a few special items (welder).

I traded for a second Valk that needed  a  clutch. Though I was getting a good deal... Found out that the PO had hit something and bent the cross member. Put the Kickstand bracket back on and hit it with a 4 lb hammer many times and got nowhere fast. I ended up putting a couple of shims under the trailing edge of the kickstand until it was extended to the right place and since I couldn't hurt it with the four lb hammer, I guess it is strong enough to hold the kickstand.

Sounds like it was possibly trailered with the sidestand down?
