Need to hear some options on what to do. After the dreaded Hydrolock I had 2 teeth missing on my idle gear. After removing the cases to change the idle gear I can only find one of the broken off teeth. I even removed the gears to look for it to be hidden. I tried to use a borescope and even a magnet on a stick. Inspected the oil that came out all with no luck. Was wondering with the front case removed how much of the sump can be Inspected. I don't want to split the case . What do you think of leaving the missing tooth in? I don't see it doing any harm.

I would definitely locate the missing tooth. Only bad things can happen if it gets caught in moving parts.

When I bought my bobber project, it had a missing tooth also. When I tore it down the tooth was laying in the bottom when I pulled the rear case off. The bike was running a while after the hydro lock happened.

When you pull off the rear case, take a look along the bottom, under the gears. There is a length of chain guard in there as sometimes the missing tooth can be jammed up behind or underneath that guard. That's where I found the tooth that had come off my gear. It was lodged in there pretty tight so it was out of the way but I'm glad I found it. No telling if/when it would have come loose and cause all sorts of problems.

I'm not sure it can be done but I would drain the oil and get some kerosene and try to flush the inside from the starter opening to see if it will come out the drain hole before splitting the case. You got nothing to lose and maybe you will get lucky. It sure beats a tear down.

Maybe a magnet epoxied to a piece of tie wire, and you could fish around for it.

Then after the magnet and the tooth were lost in the case, it would be a good time..... drug run .....

The rear cover of the engine, which houses those gears/teeth, has an oil passage plugged by a "screen". No teeth can go from the rear cover, into the main engine (the split case).
The rear cover has been removed while in the bike by others. But personally, I have removed the engine, and I would rather do that and have full un-impeded access to the rear of the engine for the repair job, than to do it while it is within the bike frame.

Thanks for all the ideas. The engine is off on my work bench. The screen filter was in the first cover in the clutch area. Their was no screen in the second cover or bay with all the gears , it drained directly into the oil pan. Would still like to know if I take the frount engine cover off can I see to the back of the engine , so I can Inspect for missing tooth.

If the little black screen filter was in place, the missing tooth should have been in the clutch case area. There is no way for the metal to get pass that screen filter into the crank case, probably is no need to remove the front cover. Remove all the metal shrapnel you can find, look behind spaces that may be able to hide metal pieces. If you really want to be on the safe side, remove the clutch and clean it up of metal.

Thanks again for everybodys help. The Idle gear is in the 2nd chamber on the other side of the screen. The screen seems to be for clutch particles . I found one tooth wedged or stuck in the side in the 2nd bay that has a clear path for the oil to drain back to the engine. The 2nd chamber has all the gear stuff the 1st chamber has the clutch. Still would like to know if the frount case is removed is their a path to the rear to find this missing tooth.

After looking at this fiche, I would say no also. It seems that there are parts of the casting that create different compartments and that you could not see from the front to the back. But, I have not seen an engine taken apart that far before. Hay Jimmyt
