I bought a semi-neglected Valkyrie Standard and made it my project bike. Can't seem to figure out how to post a picture.

It had 3x3 Two Brothers exhaust pipes coming off the headers and that were cut off just past the rear brackets. It was super loud, too loud.

So I bought stock exhaust off of eBay and now that I've installed them, the left side pipes started to smoke and choke up the bike and now it won't start at all. I didn't smell anything in the smoke (like dead rodent or burning dirt/dust).

Any ideas of the cause??

I had to take the engine guards off and decided to put them back on before I checked  how it's running. Grrrrrrrr. I'm hoping there might be an easy fix...

Loosen the exhaust to create a leak at the header or remove the exhaust. If it starts , you have a plugged exhaust. Always go back to the last change. You can run it for a minute without the exhaust .

On the plugged exhaust idea... if these pipes were hanging in a barn or something for
a while, there might be mud dauber nests plugging up the piggies. You could shine a
light up there or something and see them - would just look plugged up with mud... easy
fix if that is it...

Thanks for the responses.

I pulled the rear chrome tip off, the piggies are clear in the rear. I'm about to loosen the bolts at the header.

When it started up, there was a rattle under the foot peg area where the pipes first transition into the muffler cans. Then there was smoke, then the idle kept dropping even when I increased the choke, then the bike died and won't start now.

This is the response from the eBay seller:

The smoking in the pipe will be minor oil where bike was layed over in crash. That will clear out once rode. As far as bike bot running they were pulled from a running bike and no obstruction or internal damage will cause a bike to stop running. Not sure what type of bike you are trying to install them on as you said it was a custom job but maybe if I knew this it might help understand the issue.

Okay, put me in the line of dummy mistakes/unnecessary posts.

Decided to check the carbs for gas because it just seemed like it wasn't getting gas. Noticed my drain lines were all cracked, which allowed the gas to be easily seen as it poured out when I loosened the screws. Switched petcock to Reserve. Bingo. Started right up, still has a little rattle but nothing bad. Onto the next dummy question...

You are not the first one here to pull an "OOPS".  Nor will you be the last.  Now enjoy a quieter ride.
