I am collecting the fluids I need for the Valk and will be changing the coolant.  I have always used Honda brand but this time I am going to go with a more common and less expensive coolant.  I looked at the list the JeffK has and he lists Prestone 50/50 Extended Life.

Anyone have a mileage report on any of these coolants?

Been using Prestone  50/50 EL for several years. I change it every 2 years 10k-15k per year.

As far as drain and fill intervals, I go with Honda's recommendation of every two years, regardless of what I've put in it.  Most recently, I've been using Prestone 50/50 EL.

Whether the coolant is "old" or "new" the important thing to do with aluminum

engines is to check the ph of the coolant.

That is the most important, in order to keep the engine in good shape, and running.

As long as the ph is in the correct range, the coolant is not harming the engine.

Back at the dawn of the Valkyrie era finding silicate free coolant was not easy.  There were many posts from members who used silicate coolants only to discover leaking water pumps shortly thereafter.  A favorite on this board back then was Havoline Extended Life, which was a Dex-Cool formula.

Today the Havoline is hard to find, but most coolants I've seen use organic acid technology instead of silicates.  So just check the label or product website to make sure the stuff is silicate free and you should be fine.  There are some hybrids (like Zerex G-05) that use both OAT and silicates that should be avoided.

BTW, I've been using the Havoline Extended Life on both Valks for a combined 250,000 miles, and haven't had a problem other than the usual drips from the upper radiator hose in cold weather.
