I believe the job market will continue to be shakey for the next 12 to 18 months at the very least. I had to get myself into a positive cash flow situation and at the same time do something I enjoy (driving). I had explored working in a part time retail capacity but that's not for me. I took and passed my C.D.L. (Commercial Drivers License) school bus test today. A 38 foot, 13 ton big yellow bus Training given by the county I live in and I'm going to be a substitute school bus driver whilst I do my Special Needs and C.P.R training to become qualified as a Special Needs school bus driver. I have a much deeper appreciation of the job that a school bus driver does and the effort put into learning the practical and theoretical nuances of the job. The next step is to fully learn and put into practise the art of "Student Management" !

My dad drives school bus. He likes it and all the kids think he's the coolest because he turns on the radio to a rock station. They even sent him cards, some with gift cards to go out to eat, at the end of the year. Here's a pic...

No radio on the Fulton County, GA busses and the rules state no personal music playing electrical device to be used. A fight I'll leave for another day. So long as the little boogers aren't blowing their eardrums out and can hear me to understand instructions.

He actually uses the radio as a reward for their good behavior. If they are good, he turns the radio on.

Congratulations on the job, and the attitude. I think there is almost always work, if one wants it.

Kinda' sounds fun! Good luck! You sound like the right kind of person for it. Just remember, they're "blank" pages, and you could make 'em Valk'ers!

My mom retired as a Clayton Co., GA school bus driver. I had recently looked at taking a job in Alaska driving for one of the Cruise lines. They have a resort and was looking for drivers. Don't think I would have discipline problems with those customers. They were also looking for security guards. Now that would be ideal. Gaurding a resort out in the middle of the boonies. I guess I would be keeping the bears out?
Good luck. I sent your info out to a few folks up that way but never heard back. I'll do it again.

but I could not do classroom management while handling a bus. I held a CDL w/ S and P endorss for a while, but I didn't drive. The principal came to one day and asked me to drive. I said, "Sure, but call the wrecker to stand by just in case." He found someone else and never asked again.
Good luck.
It takes a special kind of person. It's not me. Good luck on it being you. That is a job with great responsibility.

With young and impressionable youth you must be careful not to injure their delicate nature as you lead them in the right direction. As someone who has raised a passel of kids I’ve found that when the above doesn’t work it’s time to turn to “fear and intimidation”. Seriously, good luck with the new job. I’ll bet you make some new and lifelong friends.
