Are LActrical alternators any good?  I see the 80 AMP and 85 AMP ones on Amazon and eBay for reasonable prices.  These made in China and are "upgraded" in the USA.

I have read this board that some people say the higher AMP (>40 AMP) alternators may require other modifications such as the special metal fuse (>55 AMP) and even the heavy wiring.

I put one on a couple months ago with no issues. Only 2000 miles so its hard to say how good it is . It's marked as a hitachi and I got the 85 amp.

Meathead, did it just slide in without problems? The Compufire unit needs some frame mods, and MarkT swears that you'll need a bigger battery, like the one for the GL1500 Wing. The fuse will have to be doubled to 110 from the stock 55 if you want to be really safe; Mark put two 55's on coated in liquid electrical tape.

Actually the safety factor is being reduced by half in the above scenario.

But, you knew that!

Well I wouldn't say it was easy but it went in pretty good. My biggest problem was getting the old one out. Couldn't see where the wire needed to be unplugged at. I don't know anything about a bigger battery or different fuses, hope I'm not missing something.
