I saw a kit to do the desmog on this web page: http://www.xf6-custom.com/partpages/desmog.html. Although I think it is pricy at $65, I am wondering if it has everything I need to complete the job?

Some quick setting JBWeld, new caps for the vacuum ports, and a hacksaw. That's all that's needed to desmog. Don't need to pull the tank and airbox until you're ready to at some more convenient time. A pair of 14" needle nose pliers helps also.

I think you've got a broken link.  XF6 is a long time supporter of this site, and a good guy.  Even without seeing your link, I'd say you can trust XF6.

Don't create a lot of chaos and confusion for yourself, if it is running good leave it alone.

I used two of those kits to desmog my interstates..... well Big BF did.

Pricy perhaps, but top quality product with everything you need (to remove everything unnecessary).

I don't fully understand the benefits of desmogging. Can anyone break it down for a jarhead? Also, is there anything else to do once you desmog? I've heard about jetting the carbs, and I don't understand what that means too.

The desmog mostly removes a bunch of rubber vacuum hose that eventually wears, cracks, and leaks, thus degrading engine performance (barely noticeable at first, but getting worse over time), which causes you to have to tear into things to first find then fix.  It improves nothing from a perfect stock bike, but may come under the heading of long term preventative maintenance.  And our bikes (and rubber hoses) are aging.  It does not turn the bike into a polluter, but it removes crap that was not necessary to begin with.  It goes very well with replacing all large and small Orings in the intakes, and followed by a carb synch.  (and rebuilding or replacing the OE petcock, if necessary)

Modifying (or replacing OE carb parts) is for those who change exhaust, ignition, trigger wheel (needing bigger jets or other adjustment for more gas) or allow bad gas and inactivity to gum up the carbs (need new OE parts).

Both my bikes are desmogged with all new intake orings (rebuillt petcocks, synched), and both have untouched carbs as I run stock exhaust and ignition (one with a 4* IS Airlake wheel) and exercise great care in not letting corn/inactivity gum up my carbs.

I just finished my desmog. I removed the smog gear from the top of the engine, put vacuum caps on the chrome pipes and epoxied the 6 hoses closed (California bike, extra stuff). Changed out the 'T' from no 6 carb (to some doo-dad under the tank) to a strait thru for the petcock and blocked off the tank vent to the canister. Cost me about $12.
I still have the Shiny Desmog Kit I bought, so if anyone wants it...
Fred.

Okay, am all set, read and re-read everything to do with de-smog and it doesn't seem so bad now, so.. next project will be tank off, new pingle, ca-de-smog, air filter and intake o-rings, i think the part that will be challenging will be getting the airbox back on, oh well, cant learn it if ya don't do it.
I do appreciate all the feedback, there are a good group of folks on this forum.

I just used zip ties on the air box.   Put 2 ties together and put it over one tube on the left and the tube across on the right, tighten the zip ties to pull the tubes towards the center.
Do that 2 more times on the remaining tubes and it will go back in easily.
Once back in just cut the zip ties ...   Wallahh

Not sure if you've decided yay or nay on the desmog. I have worked on several Valks for friends and it's one of the first things I do when I suspect a vacuum leak that I can't find easily. Granted, so far as I know, the problems that I am looking at have only been related to the pair valves inasmuch as they are linked by rubber that is growing old and cracking. When I go into a valk, I just dive in and remove the carb bank, yank all the rubber crap out (except the petcock line if they have one), and remove the pair valves and smog stuff. I always have a couple of Rich's cheap desmog kits on hand (I think they're $5), but sometimes will use the JB weld/hacksaw method with the same results.
For me, I just want the peace of mind that comes with having as little a chance of a vacuum leak as possible.

Darryl (sp) at 'xf6' is a good person, and a great guy to answer your questions.      I have bought some parts from him for my old 44 Harley and also for MGM.       Good service, and excellent quality  parts.     NO made in China crap.

What I did -- pulled out all the rubber tubing and stuff, leaving just the metal tubes.  Bought six vacuum caps at Autozone, about two bucks with tax.  Placed the caps over the ends of the pipes.  Voila, no vacuum leaks.  The 14" curved tip needlenose pliers were very useful, but to access under the tank I took off the right rear carburetor intake pipe, so I could get my paws under the tank and work.  Did the job.  Better performance, got rid of the clacking sound that comes from rubber that has cracked. coolsmiley

I apologize for my ignorance in advance. I have never done a desmog before and had never heard of it until I joined this awesome site.   Cheesy

I have been looking at two desmog kits:

http://redeye.ecrater.com/p/8464393/shiny-desmog-kit-chrome-honda

and

http://www.xf6-custom.com/partpages/desmog.html

They look completely different to me. The one from Redeye appears to have more rubber short hoses and I from what I have read on this site, I thought the goal was to eliminate the rubber to prevent vacuum leaks.

So my question is which one is better? I don't mind buying or installing either, but I want one for the long term so I don't have to do it again. Also, I want it to look the best that it can. I have my bike all dressed out.

I appreciate everyone's help...   cooldude

I'm not sure one is better than the other, but I've used the Redeye kit three times.

I think both kits are very good but if your goal is to eliminate rubber then go with the FX6 one.

I just installed the Redeye shiny kit, and the only hoses he uses are for plugs....there are three total...  Very nice kit, and great instructions.

I don't think you understand.  They both do away with the same amount of rubber.  One also replaces some of the rubber that will remain.

Greetings, I know this is a very old thread but I'm in need of a desmog kit and I believe that Redeye is out of business, at least the product is out of stock. Can someone point me into other options to use as a desmog solution?

Thanks,

Thank you for the response! I looked at that one and it is out of stock as well. I'll continue looking and hopefully I'll find one.
