Would someone out there please tell me how to remove the spring from the drive shaft. Special tool or what? I think its the only bump between me and getting back on the road. TIA Virgil

Well I did it the hard way, by pushing down on it with one hand and removing the clip with the other hand. But I wouldn't recommend that way, it was a bitch. Someone made a jig out of wood holding it in place. Try search under "driveshaft seal" maybe. Sorry not much help

Two people: Hold shaft in a vice, spring end up. Use a hook tool (bend a flat screwdriver 90 deg) to pull down on the spring. The other guy uses an internal circlip pliers to squeeze the circlip. Good luck, yes it's a bitch. Swear words are often useful.

I don't know about being a better man crazy2, took me probably a dozen try's before I finally got it. And yeah this lake gets pretty crazy Evil. But they have cracked down on the nudity a little, I think do it for the revenue from fines and some of the old bastards around here can be pretty prudish  tickedoff

Wait till you try to get it back on...

Here's a wooden jig I threw together... slid the spring down over the
two screws and compressed the spring until I could fit the pinion
end of the shaft in front of the 2X2...

The computer I've posted all my pictures on, probably the first web
server in South Carolina, has passed on to that great bit-yard in the
sky... I've rehosted many of the pictures (I have them all) and edited
many of my VRCC posts so that the pictures aren't broken... I was looking
for this picture and noticed the "1500 wing final drive" post (5000+ hits) is broken,
I'll have to edit that one...

Looks like a knuckle saver..  good work.

I was wondering why change it?

In my case, I had  a new drive shaft, but not a new spring...

I was wondering why change it?

Or to replace the seal.

Like your jig for removing the clip.   I have just put my drive shaft in my vice,  used a vice grip pliers to push down the spring and then set the pliers to hold the spring down.  Didn't mar the surface of the shaft.  I have replaced two seals and traded spring and clips from old shaft to new shaft that way.

I compressed the spring using two or three nylon wire ties. It worked great and easy.  cooldude
