2014 Valkyrie 1800

Seminole, Florida

« on: April 20, 2014, 04:01:21 PM »

I found my metallic noise I thought I was hearing. My front right caliper bracket pins/bolts are frozen beyond belief inside the caliper. So I no longer had a floating caliper. It was rusted solid onto the pin. I sprayed, lubed soaked it and worked it all day trying to free it. No joy. I finally removed the caliper and put it in a vise and gently tapped the bracket with a rubber mallet trying to free it. Then I started really hurking on it. I broke the bracket and was able to screw the threaded end out of the caliper (Thank God, $250.00 caliper) I found the rubber grommet/boot slightly torn which must have let water in causing this rust and corrosion.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? I've never heard of this being a problem?

I am having problems locating part numbers on the OEM parts page. GL1500A, GL1500A A, GL1500C, GL1500CT, GL1500A AC, GL1500SE and on and on, I can't remember.
If you can help, mine is a 1998 Standard, by birth. I need the front right bracket, pins and rubber boots
If anyone has a front right caliper bracket with pins and rubber boots, you could be my hero. I am dead in the water and really wanted to make the ride this coming weekend.

The broken hacksawed end in the caliper turned out easily, the pin end which is supposed to slide in the bracket is not budging.

Pinwall usually has some cheap... ironically, the only front right one he has
right now that I see is this one:

There's a front set on eBay with 2 days left @ about $67 right now (not pinwall)...

I looked it up on the 1500ct (tourer, you're probably 1500c, they both have the same caliper,
Interstate too for front) and that bracket is about $80, plus you need pins and stuff...
hope you can find used...

Doug, I have a spare bracket, either side.  Let me know how to get it to you. Or a complete caliper, pins are free, but will probably need the o-ring seals replaced. Oh, free of course.

Life is like a hot bath. It feels good while you’re in it, but the longer you stay in, the more wrinkled you get.

Doug, I have a front caliper set I rebuilt to use on the 1200. But it turns out I can't use the Valkyrie rear wheel so I'm sticking with the 1200 both front and rear. These have new pads and new inner o-rings/seals, new pistons, had to replace the boot on one. Same boot you're talking about. Let me know.

Also....both are mounted on the mounting bracket.

John, Terry, I greatly appreciate your offer, I just spoke with Grumpy and I will be picking it up tomorrow.
I'm glad to be apart of this fine group. All of you are always there for others in need, much of which goes unnoticed and not on this public forum.
 Thanks

Kinda makes me weepy just thinking of all the good guys and gals in this group! Smiley Seriously, is there anything that this group has not "Stached away" to fit our aging Fat Gurls?

Any one who has been to John's or Bill's garages will attest to this, They could probably build a couple of Valk's from their spare parts boxes!!  Cool

My take away from this...Don't cut corners with your maintenance.
Last time I changed the pads I just pulled the one screw/pin that goes through the bottom of the caliper and holds the pads in place, dropped out the old and in with the new.
I will now always pull the bracket/caliper from the rotor and clean and lube the bracket/caliper slide pins check function and clean pistons. Cutting corners will cost you in the long run.
I used a 60ml syringe and silicone tubing and sucked the fluid for bleeding, worked very fast and easy. Not a drop spilled and you can clearly see through the tubing when all the air is removed.
Brakes have never felt better.  Thanks Grumpy cooldude
See you all Saturday
