Ok I need some help. I changed out the motor on Shelia's bike due to an oil pressure issue. The bike runs great around town but when I put it on the interstate running it at 75 to 80 within 5 miles it act's like it's running out of fuel. When I changed the motor I moved all the de-smog kit from the old motor to this one(only had 500 miles on the kit). New gas line with no dips and new thick wall vacuum hose for petcock. What am I missing. Dennis

Check the tank vent line first. Is it slightly pinched?

Did you check the vacuum on the petcock? Apply a vacuum to petcock and see if it leaks down? If it leaks vacuum it's bad and can cause those symptoms.
Also, fuel tank vent line could be kinked or obstructed.

put a wire tie under the gas cap and close it ( to break the seal) and take it for a ride, if the problem goes away, check the vent hose.

Just a bit...doesn't take much. Should hold indefinitely...but 30 seconds is fine.
You say, "new vent line, straight down"...does it still have the "T" in it? Third port connects to nothing, is in the vent line about alternator level... That is vacuum break and if missing could cause a problem, especially if the tank is full.
If all that checks out I'd start checking voltages as well...solid battery, charging, good grounds...

The T is in the line. The T is about at the bottom of the alternator and then the line from the bottom of the T is ran down from there with the drain lines Is this the right way. Thanks Dennis

If you think its running out of fuel, then that is what it is. Tried reserve? No filter in fuel line right? No kink? I would think tank strainer, petcock, find a way to bypass and eliminate. Let us know,, Firefighter.

When you replaced the fuel line did you possibly make it a bit longer than the original? I tried this on my '99 Std to make it a bit easier to remove the tank (you'd be able to lift it a bit higher). It was then doing exactly what you're describing.

My Interstate was doing the exact same thing intermittently. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out. I rebuilt the petcock and that did not help. I finally bought a new petcock and that fixed it. I decided the old petcock had a crack or something that caused it to suck air instead of vacuum and then it would run out of gas.

Thanks to everyone and a few who nailed it. When I changed out the fuel line I got it to long and it made a p-trap where i could not see it . After the help from YoungPUP and a few more I was able to find the issue and get it fixed. Now just waiting on one thermostat gasket and this should finish this project. Thanks Again Dennis
