Lookee what I scored off Ebay for the 1200 project.

Got these for nearly $100 less than others just like them, these came from a tool liquidator company....with free shipping which was around $20 according to the other listings. They claim to have double walled construction for the first 12" which is essentially down to the collector. Should help prevent bluing, but I don't really care. They have a smoother angle at the bottom than the OEM headers so should have good flow. Now all I need is a set of mufflers off a HD Sportster to go with them.

I got most of the gaskets in that I needed to assemble the engine, have both the front and rear covers on, including the clutch(rebuilt the slave cylinder). I gave the block a coat of self-etching primer, followed by one coat of silver engine paint. Will give it another coat probably tomorrow. Then I mount the heads, install new belts and close up the front. Still have to mount the thermostat housing and associated cooling tubes on top of the engine like the Valk has. It's all been repainted as well. Then I'll probably mount the engine in the frame so I can have the hydraulic table for other pieces of the puzzle. Sure glad I'm not being paid on piece work.

I haven't tried starting it yet, I'm being optimistic I guess. I looked at it this way; painting/sprucing up the engine before testing it involves less work wasted, than installing it first and then if it works good having to pull it out again to do the paint & spruce up afterward. The painting process isn't nearly as difficult as pulling it, involves much less labor which is in my favor at the moment. So, if the engine still has problems, I've only burned 3-4 hours with the cleaning/painting....which I did sitting down.

I thought of that but was overruled 1:1.   You know how that goes...mama ain't happy, nobody's happy. She always fussed when Rob used to come by with his straight through Corbras.

Less than $50 to my door, I was the only bidder and I waited until the last few seconds and submitted the starting figure. Bingo! Should be here by end of the week. They're about 20" long so I held one of the headers up in place and added 20" beyond it. The ends should come out about 4" past the rear axle. I have no idea how loud they are but figured for the price I'd take a gamble. I think the fishtail look is kinda neat anyway, especially on the old 1200. I have the engine painted with a coat of self-etching primer, followed by two coats of silver engine paint. Mounted the left head last night, will do the right side the next day or so, then paint both heads to match the engine. After that I'll probably hang the engine in the frame and string the harness. The single tab on the mufflers makes it easy, just need to run a simple strap down from the frame....I'm sure I have something stashed away. I think the headers and mufflers together will be kinda cool looking. The second picture is kinda fuzzy but it shows them right side up. There's less than 1/8" difference in diameters between the header and the muffler so I should be able to draw it down with a good clamp. If I don't like the position of everything, I'll just add an extension piece between the header and the muffler. Just have to wait and see how it looks when mounted first.
