so, I bought an alternator off of ebay.  when I ordered it, I questioned whether it actually was for an interstate, or if it was off of a standard, or tourer.  so I got it today, typed in the product number off of the manufacture (Hitachi LR140-722) into google, and I find that Sears has one for $159!!  AND IT EVEN SAYS IT'S FOR A HONDA VALKYRIE INTERSTATE!!

http://www.sears.com/rareelectrical-new-12v-oem-alternator-honda-valkyrie-interstate/p-SPM6199819505

did more searching, and found a company that had one for $109!

http://www.motorcityreman.com/hioelrlr.html

heck, that's a FAR cry cheaper than one off of HDL, or from the Honda dealer!!

even some company called "new-egg" has 'em for $159!!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1BY0PC0660

I bought an alternator just 'cause I've heard of people getting stranded, and last summer, there was a guy from Tennessee that needed an alternator and he was stranded in Tomahawk Wi. about 3 hour ride from here.  had I have had an alternator in my shed, I would have ran it up to him but I didn't.  so, now I do!!

my only concern is, it's a 40 amp alternator, and I know some people have beefed up theirs to a 65 amp alternator off of a Gold Wing.  is that really necessary?  I look at it like this; my cycle is 15 years old, most likely has a 40 amp alternator, hasn't given me any problems yet......

I thought the 40 amp was for a standard? I bought a 85 amp off of amazon recently, it was a hitachi for $159.

I thought it was just the capacitor on the I/S for noise suppression for the radio.

I'm on my second alternator. The first one crapped out at 30,000km. I just replaced the brushes and rubber dampers after another 150,000km (80,000 mi). I rebuilt the first alternator and carry it with me on long trips (just in case).

The Goldwing 1500 alternator and the Valkyrie are the same. The GW and the I/S have the noise suppressors. Clock the GW alternator and it's a Valkyrie alternator.
Think you are doing good to carry a spare on long trips, that's about the only thing to let you down with a Valkyrie that is serviced regularly.

You know I was worried about the one I bought. It was from a company in CA. Called Lalectrical and it looks like a hitachi to me but I'm no expert.

I just put a Los Angeles Electrical (LActrical) 85 AMP unit on mine ~1,000 miles / 4 weeks ago and so far so good.  On Amazon it was $152 shipped from California.  Check back next year (:>)!

Other than the previously mentioned noise suppression capacitor, the only difference between the two versions is the plastic insulator/cable positioning clamp. The I/S alternator routes the cable a bit differently than its Standard/Tourer counterpart, but the plastic pieces can be (carefully) interchanged between them.

John, that's what I thought but figured I'd ask and see what came up. To my knowledge the units themselves are the same.

I've got 76,000 miles on my phat girl. Thought I'd put off the u-joint til next year. coolsmiley NOPE.
First weekend out after rebuilding my forks, and new shocks, I was fortunate to make it home. Wasn't too far. The alternator is the only real questionable, because of age and mileage, part. Got me thinking I should before INZANE just because. How much of a PITA is replacing it?

I don't know about the 85 amp being the way to go, but they can be a pain . The hardest part for me was tracing the wire back and getting it unplugged. Lots of extra wiring made for tight quarters and not being able to see it. Pay close attention to how you cocked it to get it out and put new one back in with the same angle. That went pretty good for me, maybe because I was expecting a war to get it in.
