Just take the switch apart and clean it. Be careful not to lose any small parts such as springs & screws and should be good for many more miles.

Had that happen a couple of times with my own 99 Is.  Just hosed the switch  with electronic contact cleaner.  Put the tube up to the area between the rocker and the housing and fire away.

When you clean that switch you need to make sure the little metal contact is free to move up and down by that little spring under it.  I bought a brand new one and the little contact was stuck in its slot, I had to take a razor knife and clean out the slot so it could freely move

It's too bad that all the photos associated with the guide are no longer available.   Undecided

It's been mentioned that you often can postpone the switch repair if you learn to finesse the button.  My '98 Tourer's switch had the problem when it was only a month old.  I found that you could make it work by pressing the button at one of the corners.  Eventually I took it apart and cleaned it, but the technique worked just fine for at least a year.

My starter button and headlight went out while on a trip to Canada.  Bought a new bulb with no help.  Read the posts and found that the starter button could be cleaned.  Took the button off making sure not to lose the springs, cleaned the contacts, reinstalled the switch with one drop of 3in1 oil on the springs.  Headlight and starter switch work perfect.
