The small tab underneath the tank that secures the plastic side cover broke off. I was taking it off during 0 degree weather and it was so brittle the tab snapped off. Any suggestions on how to keep the cover locked in

I used safety wire to keep mine on. My loop on the side panel was not broken thou it was the tab on the center panel. I Ran a piece of wire from the side cover loop up to something under the seat area. I covered the wire with small tubing to keep it from chafing into anything. To remove panel I just remove the seat and untwist the wire.

One of mine was broken when I purchased the bike, a small hole had been drilled up in the corner and a small pointed Philips screw put in, was there when I got it and it is still there, I use it and it still secures the cover.

Same here except the PO broke both, but at least he did a good job with the screws. Makes them real easy to remove now.

The exact steps, where to pull first, etc. are spelled out in the owner's manual... I look it up when I go to remove a side cover if it has been a while since I've done it. I read all the archives when I first got my Valkyrie and started out terrified of the side covers... so far it has served me well As far as ABS glue is concerned, back in 2008 I noticed a crack at one of the grommets, and fixed it with ABS glue... http://myweb.clemson.edu/~hubcap/d.sidecover/I don't know that it would work so well to glue on a tab... -Mike

Plast Aid looks like the perfect product for repairing my fairing. One of the metal gromets has busted loose and the plastic around it is all busted up. Just ordered some and will let you know how it works. Perfect timing. I was going to go look for ideas on how to fix this tomorrow. Thanks for sharing this information Jet Driver.

Luckily, I've never broken a side cover tab but if I did I'd consider this fix from our own Ratdog and Cyclops. They're part of the Vermin Board from the great Northwest area(Seattle specifically). Here's the link, http://www.vermin-club.org/mods/side_cover_tab_repair.htm

When using Plast-Aid, do it outdoors. Lots of nasty fumes.

Google some customer responses (I think there's some on Amazon). Looks like there's a learning curve to this stuff.
