I'm really careful where I put my magnetic tank bag when I get gas. On the seat is the only place it goes, never on the ground. I keep my bike clean also. Even with all of that I'm getting some scuffs on my tank. Not too happy about that. I've tried polishing them out but it doesn't seem to help. I really like having my tank bag on the bike. It's a very useful item. It holds my miscellaneous item like a spare shield for my helmet, house keys and phone, so I'd like to keep it on. Any ideas?

Go to your local BMW shop and buy a tube of "Simichrome".
it is a very gentle abrasive polish, follow the directions to the letter.
It's cheap too! (at a BMW shop?)

Mcguires scratch x2.0 or some thing like that.

To prevent those scratches I put black (my bikes are black) vinyl tape on the tank before the bag goes on.  Clear shipping tape would work as well on other colors.  Warm it up with a blow dryer prior to removing it if it comes time to take it off.  May leave a little adhesive residue, but lighter fluid or naptha will take that off.

Do you mean like electrical tape? Regular old black tape that I have a dozen rolls around my garage? Or did I miss understand? (Probably that)  My bike is black too.

This is what I use. I don't use it all over the paint, just where the small scuff marks are.  Works really good.

I use 3M Finesse-It II.  This stuff works wonders, and is what all of the dealers use to polish those small scratches and imperfections out of the bikes and cars sitting on the showroom floor.  Less than $15 at most automotive parts or paint supply shops.

Personally I think tank and fender bags and bibs all do (small) damage to paint over time, despite best efforts.  I've used all kinds of stuff to remove swirls and rubs from black paint.  None if it works, completely.  A high speed wool buff w. light compound by my magician-bump-shop-paint-man was the best I ever had (it removes some paint).

If you like your bag, use it and live with the results, I do.

My 15yo bikes show wear.  I do my best to keep them pristine, get compliments all the time, but their perfect days are behind them, and I don't really care.

Sort of like my aging body.  Try to keep the mechanics in good order, but the looks are slowly deteriorating.  So it goes.

When you put ANYTHING on a painted surface no matter how careful you are you WILL get scratches on the painted surface. BUT you already know this. As you are traveling the dust and grit gets between the two mated surfaces and rubs and acts like sand paper. My brother has a nice three pouch leather organizer in/on the windshield of his Valkyrie. Have you considered a windshield pouch?? RIDE SAFE.

After you get it polished to your satisfaction, you could try one of these...........

I bought a small roll of that rubber mesh kitchen drawer liner at Wally World, you know, like the stuff you line the drawers in tool chests with too.   Paid a buck or two for a roll, cut a piece out that would just cover under the bag and the magnets still hold the bag just fine.

Not one single mark on my tank from it after years of use.

Just so happens that I'm being dragged kicking and screaming to Wal-Mart tomorrow! At least now I have something to look for. Thanks
