seems like all the passengers complain that the I/S backrest  doesn't sit them up enough and that when they sit back on it, they slide forward.  so they end up pushing on the foot rest to try and stay more vertical.   is there a way to "shim" . adjust the top of the backrest so it positions the passenger more vertical?

You might look into an Ultimate backrest. Don't know about IS, but that same problem has been addressed by them on the Standard and Tourer pass. backrest with very good results.

Somewhere in my take off stuff, I have a Std/Tourer larger back rest from Des @ Ultimate.

Mom and the daughter both loved it for long rides.

Currently on MGM with the Trike kit, I had them use a Harley tour box and their backrest.

So far neither one of them has complained that the HD did not fit them.

Ultimate passenger seat  cooldude   the nose of the seat has a slight upward curve to it for this very reason. My wife has never complained about sliding forward.

No, you can not reposition the back rest.

But with some thought, and fabrication, you could change the angle of the trunk. Would it look nice?

I would buy a replacement OEM backrest, and using the base, make your own custom back rest.

Or like suggested, buy that Ultimate.

Just so you know, when ordering a complete set of Ultimate seats for interstate, Ultimate has you send your OE trunkrest to them to be reworked (really a core charge/replacement), and they do change/improve the angle of the trunkrest as part of the upgrade.   I'm pretty sure they will sell you one with or without yours being sent in, but they will charge you more if you don't send yours in for core charge.  As noted, Ultimate seats, including passenger pillion, are raised in the nose to stop the sliding forward.  All it takes is money.

It will not match the stock dual tour IS seat, but who cares if comfortable.

Otherwise, all I can think of is a very thin (maybe wedge shaped) cushion to add to the existing trunkrest.

# 16020 - Passenger backrest - plain - $130  (plus $100 Refundable Core Charge)

And you could try Pinwall Cycle for used.

My wife didn't like my IS's backrest as she was used to a mustang backrest on my standard which sits you up about 5-7 deg straighter than stock so I took mine off and had an upholstery guy add an extra 1 1/4" of foam at the top down to no extra at the bottom and she is pleased with the result cost me about $125 , but worth it cause if Mamma ain't happy you know what they say ain't nobody happy coolsmiley
