Is there a difference in size between
Yuasa YUAM6RH4H YTX14H-BS  and the plain YTX14-BS

My year or so old battery died again  Cant find the receipt but still have the box  uglystupid2

Next time I will keep the email for the order confirmation WITH the box

I did not think I left any accessories on  This is the 2nd time since winter so I am looking at ordering the Yuasa YUAM6RH4H YTX14H-BS  from amazon prime

I have the YTH14-BS now

For 78 bucks I am dissapointed but not as much as if I was on the road

Glad it happened NOW instead of two weeks from now

Both have these dimensions.  I replaced with the YTX14H-BS  a few months ago.  240 C.C.A. vs. 200 for the YTX14-BS

Just something to think about. For the past two years, I have been having the same issues with relatively new batteries dying. I tested the alternator and got good readings. I kept blaming the batteries. Last week I went to Myrtle Beach Bike week. We took a trip to Charleston SC, about 100 miles from where we were staying in MB. About 80 miles from MB my alternator died. My lights went out and Val just died. 10:00 pm, no roll backs would respond. AAA worthless! ( I had the Gold coverage, should have wiped my butt with that. Have since dropped AAA) Anyway, over $1000.00 to have bike retrieved and repaired. Could have put in a new alternator at home for around $200.00. I`m not saying you need a new alternator. (maybe, maybe not) I`m just relaying my experience.

Sorry about the battery problems Oss! Undecided  I'm curious if you have a volt meter that you can view periodically while you're riding? They can be useful to predict a charging failure. Mine usually reads 14.0 to 14.5 volts going down the road.

Evan that was going to be my 1st suggestion.

Get a volt meter installed, and see how that alternator is holding out.

I realize ya only got 2 weeks to kickoff.

I'd put the battery on a slow charger for overnight and with the volt meter you can find if the alternator is going out on ya.

From this link, on the right side near the bottom is a Gold Wing alt that is mucho cheaper..    Just have to rotate the head piece to get it to line up with the Valkyrie mount.    It is listed under Alternator options.

With your short time schedule, if it was me, I'd order the alternator and find a good Volt meter and head to my friendly Valk mechanical tech. to have them installed before you head out for I-14.    

As my Grandma (RIP Darlin) used to say, better safe than sorry.

Always has one green light when engine on

The voltmeter also helps me to see the fog lites are on



Currently the charger is on and in the morning I will see if the bike starts

Monday Gman is coming over and we will check with proper gauge if the alt is charging

At about 16000 miles I needed an alternator replaced under warranty
now  almost 95000 the brushes could be showing wear in the alternator

RJ  that is my motto also  always have a plan B  I had bought u joint a month before needing it, will look into spare alternator now

IS THIS THE ONE ?

OSS--In-as-much-as presently your alternator is working, just get some new brushes and (in case you need it) a bearing.  Install thre brushes & bearing (if needed) and retest the output.  It should read between 13.8 and 14.1 at just about any RPM above 1500.  Total about $20.00!

What brand, and how old is your charger. A poor quality or failed charger can cause premature battery failure. Get a CTEK 3300 if you question the charger. Amazon has the best price.

The one I'm referring to is Honda Part # ( Part # is 31100-MT2-015 ).

I did a search on 'honda part #Part # is 31100-MT2-015 and I got several entries.

Check each one out and whoever gives the best price I would be my go-fur.

OSS-- I couldn't figure out how to respond to your PM , so here is my response--

As I recall there are only two brushes and one bearing. For me, the hardest part of the job was getting the dang alt. out of the bike & of course, back in.  If you can get someone to show you the first time, it's not so bad and likewise for the brushes install.  There are a couple of "tricks" to the install and again a "show-N-tell" would be a must.  The entire job is ALL patience!!!

I have had the best luck with Sears Die Hard Gold. A little pricey but it seems to last the longest. Took it out of the old 97 and put it in my tractor after we wrecked, It's  still strong!

Oss - I used to have the Kury meter wired into the fog lite lines, but it never registered correct voltage.  Then it fell apart.  Mine was mounted in the exact same place as yours. 

Replaced it with a Honda marine analog voltmeter and from the fog light line, it never showed more than 12.5 volts, going way low if idling. So I ran a line from the meter to a relay just before the switched power line.  The relay, when activated by the power being turned on, gives me a direct line to the positive battery terminal.  14 volts consistently shows at 1000 rpm or more.

In regards to the Yuasa batteries I am more confused now.  lol

YTX 14 BS  vs YTX 14H BS

you are right the H show more cranking amps.

I now have both, ordered 14 and then decided to go with the 14H

Here is the interesting part,

The plain YTX 14 BS weighs more,  9.70 pounds compared to the H at 8.60 pounds.   

and in addition the YTX 14 BS has a higher whr rating.  it is 168 compared to the H version at 144

I am told the whr rating is the amount of amp juice in the battery.  (how long it will last with a draw)   

so in summary the standard version weighs 12% more and has 14% more power..

so I don't understand the cold cranking amps being higher on the YTX 14H BS.

I am going to talk to Yuasa tomorrow and get there input.

It looks like on here, some get better service out of one or the other.

Here is what my take on the situation is:

The "H" has more cranking amps because there are more plates in the battery case.

Since the case is the same size, the plates are necessarily thinner.

With more plates you have to have more dividers which take more room and weigh less than the lead plates.

With more plates and more dividers there is less room for the acid which will result in less weight for the

battery and also reduce the Whr rating for the same reason.

Someone has already contacted Yuasa and their reply (Yuasa) that the plates are the same is true when

considering chemical compound but deceptive because they deflect the comparison regarding size and thickness.

Thicker plates and more acid results in a better and longer lasting battery with all other things being equal.

And my last point, is the fact that just about any battery you can purchase, is a "gel" type AGM battery -

they have stopped making the old style batteries, so many think are still being offered for sale. The one's you had

the ability to add water when needed. They now are all sealed type batteries and AGM technology.

In a lead acid battery each plate is roughly 1 1/2 volts, the larger the plate the higher the potential amperage. Most batteries fail when debris builds up on the bottom and short the plates. In higher CCA batteries they wire sets of plates in parallel to electrically make them bigger.  Everything has a trade off. more plates less room for acid and debris.
