So, I've pulled out the u-joint and there is no perceivable play, even when I put a screwdriver across the tips of one yoke and twist the blade against the crotch of the other yoke. There is only a very slight resistance to movement of the joint when I hold one end vertical and allow the other end to dangle, so it isn't stuff like other automotive new u-joints I've handled. Need I be concerned?

It's good. And use Valvoline Durablend moly grease in your pinion cup and don't worry about the shaft/cup. I don't rely on the drive unit oil to lube. Apply an adequate amount of grease to the shaft/cup.
