well, probably not really, no where near 10,000 miles.  Being able to go 10K on an oil change instead of 3K is why I switched to Mobile 1.  However I just cant do it.  Im a tad over 6K miles on this oil and I just had to dump it.....I know , I know..........but that is neither here or there.  The reason Im posting is because I buy Mobil 1 in the 5QT jug and this is the second time I got what I call a "free oil change"  You know use four and save one do that 3 more times and you have a "free gallon" which you did pay for but long enough ago that you cant remember......so its "free"!

This is also the second time I had oil left over after measuring in the 4 qts.  So if you are like me, dont care about that 3.9 thing and just go with a gallon........dont take out a qt and dump the rest, you may be over since you planned on being a little over anyways......

I use a meterd funnel and do exactly 1qt each time.

Ok public service announcement is over....if this were a real emergency I wouldnt be using this smiley  Grin

Haha, I am the same way and cringe at the thought of 8 or 10,000 miles and I usually end up doing it at 6k as well. I usually buy mine when on sale and buy 5 qts and with a funnel dump them in fast, not trying to get the last drop and figure I put in 3.9. Wink

No wonder I don't have an extra quart left over, I've been using the hold thing.

Funny you bring it up Jeff.  Prepping my bike for NC, I checked my book and find I have almost 4.8K on my T6 Rotella.  Almost feel guilty not changing it before a trip, but doing so would just be a waste of money (esp since fresh last August).   My usual window is 6-8K.

Same deal with my battery.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than it is around 7-8 yrs old (on a tender 24 X 7 year round).  New one in the box out with parts.  'Course now that I posted this I am doomed.  (Still fires the bike in one second every time)  Last one went 11 years and was still fine when I changed it out of worry.

I was under the impression that car oil had friction reducers in it ''to increase fuel mileage''....    coolsmiley

And, that,,, that would potentially, lead to clutch slippage when used in a (wet clutch) motorcycle...   ???

Is this not,,,, the case?       Shocked

You have to look at at the ring....if it says "energy conserving" at the bottom, NO GOOD.  If its blank like the Mobile1 10-40 than its GOOD TO GO

Besides knowing the correct codes in the ring (I don't), the key words on synthetic you cannot use in a Valk are energy conserving or contains friction modifiers.

T6 Shell Rotella 5-40 is diesel oil, and works great in Valks (thou not as quiet as some more expensive stuff like Mobil 1 and Amzoil).  And should be very good for the hot South summers.

I use Honda 20/50 oil that the company calls for. Change every 3000 or so, since the clutch runs in oil and is a wear item, I prefer to change my oil more often.

Well goody......and oil thread.   Wink

The bike gets Mobil 1 v-twin 20w50 with Pure One filters and usually gets changed twice a year regardless of miles (usually not that much).  It's probably overkill, but it's my money and it makes me feel better.

Car and truck get changed every 3000 or so.  Same reason as the bike.

Car is still fairly new and has about 15000 on it, but the truck has well over 200,000 on it and doesn't burn or leak a drop.

My last truck had almost 300,000 on it and it got changed every 3000 also....it didn't leak or burn a drop either.

I believe in keeping the oil changed.

Question for you...

So if you use Honda dino oil (specified by "the company") How many miles does "the company" recommend going before changing?

Been running Mobil 1 15W50 for over 150,000 miles. I change it at 5 k intervals just because it is easy to remember. I have drained this oil out before and ran it in my lawnmowers for a whole summer of cutting grass with no problems. As for oil filters I ran the super tech 6607 and the fram 7313 but because of so much bad mouthing of the fram I now run the PL 14610 Purolator.

I thought Honda recommended  10/40 and every 5,000 Undecided

service manual calls for 8k oil and filter change using the low quality per oil analysis honda oil.
10w40 is called for no high temp limit, they allow 20w50 also to be used.
they allow 10w30 to 95F ambient, honda now calls for 10w30 for the GL1800 but didn't first few yrs. I have posted before oems use 10w30 for their engine testing, I posted oil analysis for amsoil 10w30 diesel oil at 8k miles, came back still good for continued use.

The book says 8000 miles the way I remember. Good selling feature for a touring bike. Its hot where I am at so I go for the 20/50, I have used lower viscosity in the past, seems more quite with 20/50. As for the quality of the oil, no matter how great any oil is, it gets dirty and you can't do anything about that except change it, and that is why I prefer to change more regular. Even the more expensive oils which don't break down as fast get dirty especially with your clutch running in oil. This dirty oil is an enemy to the engine. I also change my 96 GMC truck every 3000 miles, it has over 281000 miles, and also runs great, does not use any oil, leaks a little. Anyway, just ride safe and have fun!

Bingo....8K by the book on non-synthetic.

I used to change every 3K also, but I know many GoldWing riders....they go a lot longer on oil than I would, the ones that converted to synthetic were pretty much all the same story annually or 10,000 miles which ever comes first.

I think synthetic oil and change between 6 and 8K is very reasonable.  Dino oil I would be uncomfortable past 5K even though the book says 8.

I would not criticize anyone for changing more often......your bike your money I did it for years...however, there are way too many Honda riders getting 10K miles on a gallon of oil and NOT having any oil related problems with the engine, transmission or clutch to convince me that going beyond 3K is harmful.

I do like that Mobil 1synthetic! I also change my oil and filter earlier than Honda recommends.  Peace of mind is a good thing! Roll Eyes

I change my oil in November once a year at 5-7k miles because I literally don't have anything better to do.

Just a reminder...I started this post not to create an oil war.  I don't care if you change oil every 50,000 miles or after every ride.

However, when you do, if you buy your oil in a 5qt jug, I recommend not trusting the volume.  Its my experience there is a little extra.

That was just my opinion, I am not bent any, or at war. My Valk is my hobby and I try to take the best care of it that I can. I think the engines are the best around and with care will last forever. I'm an oil changer, there, I said it!  Have fun!

Chis- I asked my wife what she thought of the photo that you posted.
She said she will not let our dog on the furniture!

However, the bike in the living room is ok with her.

Try telling that to my dogs. If we ask them to get off our couch and on their beds, they sulk and go to the corner. I do not have a couch to take my afternoon nap anymore.......
