replacing tire and pulled pumkin and drive shaft - came out as one piece, all connected.  not worried about weep hole this time - all lubed up and trying to re assemble.  having trouble and losing patience trying to get drive shaft end to slide back into ujoint end?  any suggestions or is it just hit or miss after 101 jiggles?

If the swing arm is DOWN, raise it and the u-joint will slide right into place.

It is best if the swing arm is on the same axis as the frame.

Good Luck.

PS:    When ya get disgusted and pissed off, walk away and have a cold drink, now I never said bubbly stuff, a good COLD glass of iced tea will work just fine, even WATER will work.

Happy Trails.

Peace.

RJ.

ok, thanks.  so I went back and jiggled it in but I think the spring stayed up in the u joint end so I had to push hard and get a nut on to hold it.  wrenched my back in the process but that'll heal.  there is no possible way that tightening down the four nuts (after getting tire back on and axle tight) and letting everything settle in can do any harm, right?

Doesn't sound right to me. The spring should be held onto the shaft by a washer and circlip. If those weren't on the driveshaft when you removed I would be trying to figure where they went.

"circlip", don't you mean a Jesus Clip?   Like in Jesus Christ where did that little bastard go.

Then slowly walk over to the box of clips and find a new one.

Its not right.  When it slips in theres only a fourth of an inch gap between the two flanges.......the nut should go on easy

ditto
remove the shocks if you haven't already use a tie strap to hold the swing arm level. reassemble and make sure you tighten in correct order. works every time.

I have found that it is quite easier to accomplish of the bike is in gear. Otherwise it can be painful.

Note: I would accept Pancho's generous offer. This shouldn't be difficult to do and will be much easier after seeing someone else do it.

Good luck!  cooldude

It might be tough to get it into gear with the wheel and drive shaft off and the engine off.  And I wouldn't want to put it in gear with the engine running and the back end of the u-joint not connected.  That being said, I've always managed to get the drive shaft in the u-joint with the transmission in neutral.

Maybe but I do not have a problem doing it that way. I did it again this afternoon (installing new tire).
However re-installing the rubber boot over the universal joint was another story LOL!
