I have had almost every part of this bike off at some point to repair, replace, rebuild, repaint or clean. And, I have been able to put everything back, have it all work with a minimum of leftover parts. But this one has me stumped. For some reason I can't seem to get the seat's center slide lock to engage. The male notch on the seat lines up with the female bracket on the front section of the rear fender, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the !@#&*$ to lock into place. And now that I have the bike repainted I am hyper-cautious about scratching the clearcoat on the tank.

No parts are bent or broken.

The only time I have ever gotten it back on right is when a buddy flexed the seat to allow the two parts to engage while I lined up the front lock and then sat sown hard on the seat. That works, but I can't imagine it normally takes two people to lock the seat into place.

Anyone have any tips, tricks, magic or voodoo that works? This is more frustrating than re-installing the airbox and, as we all know, that is a tricky little maneuver.

As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are not engaging the center "lip" in the center of the seat.  Standing on the left side of the bike, with your right hand, pull up on the front of the seat.  With your right hand, push down on the center of the seat to engage that center lip and then the front of the seat will lock down when you let go of the front of the seat.  If you set the seat down on the bike and look from the left side under the center of the seat, you will see how that lip of the seat engages onto the bike.

Easy once you see how it all engages.

Great question Rugguy!  I'm new to my I/S and have been experiencing the same issue.  crazy2  I've been counting on the passenger hold strap to keep that portion of the seat in place. Gunner I'm going to try what you describe, thank you. Smiley

+1

Need to "bend" the middle of the seat down, then push the front down.  Otherwise, you go above the center lock.

Thanks all....I have tried all that and still can't get it to engage. But like I said, with a new paint job I am hyper careful about not scratching the tank. Gonna tape a microfiber to the tank and bend the %$#@! out of the seat. When the center slide lock ins't properly engaged I think it can give you a squirrely feeling. Plus.I like things to be right.....
