Author Topic: Interstate running out of gas and nothing in reserve  (Read 938 times)

I had the tank off few weeks ago and decided to put a new diaphram in the petcock. no problems before i did this. i just did it due to the face that the bike has 78k on it. any ideas on what I did wrong?

ps. if it aint broke dont fix it!!!!

Did you put the knob on the way it came off ?
Maybe now your running on reserve when you start.

well guys I thought that too but the pointer pointed down says run. middle is off and uo says reserve. now i guess ill pill off the knob and see if the stem will do a 360. if so I may be 180 degrees out. this may well be the problem Ill let ya know tomorrow. im at work now.

Also it is possible, even easy to have the switch in-between settings like near on but not "clicked in fully" This is even easier on an older OEM valve.  If your valve is near "on" but not in its detent, well for all intents and purposes its on RESEVE at that point

Did you remove the petcock from the tank? Could you have loosened the screen in the tank?

Also feel it is the dial not in the right place.

If you had the petcock off the bike and left the screen in the tank, it may have moved enough that the o-rings isn't sealing it to the petcock when you re-installed it. Pull the petcock, and the screen, set the screen firmly on the petcock and re-assemble.

I have never seen this mention, but found out I had that problem when I installed a NEW petcock in my neighbors bike and he didn't have reserve. I had left his screen in the tank. Seating it on the petcock took care of it.
