Shopping alternators, as it appears mine has gone south.  I am not up to servicing it, as I can get a new one on Amazon for $150.  Actually, they have a high output 85 amp one for the Interstate. Is it OK to put that in my standard?  More is better, yes?    Smiley  These are not OEM Honda alternators, anyone have any experience with the cheaper ones?

Do you have a link to the one you are talking about? There are different ones on the market.

Only have to watch the physical size. I think some of the high output alternators are a little bigger than stock, and might not fit in the space between the motor and the frame......I think.... Should be some measurements on the sales page. But if it is made for a Goldwing 1500 should work electrically. There are tons of pages on installing Goldwing alts on Valks cooldude

According to that link, it lists the standard (GL1500C).

Therapist, I've been using that one for 6 months and 5k. No problems but its in a I/S. don't think the standard would be a problem.

The only difference between a standard and I/S is the capacitor for noise suppression

You can use a gold wing alt but you will have to take the case apart and twist I to line up properly see the alt parts page in tech

Newegg had valk alternators cheap a few weeks ago

You're good to go as long as you don't get the Compufire alternator, it is the one that is too large.

So, has anyone with a standard installed the interstate alternator ?  I would think it would be common, as we are always looking to beef up our parts (said the guy with IS carb springs and IS rear shocks)  Roll Eyes

Doesn't matter what you ride, just that you do.

Hello!!  I have a '98 GL1500CD that I installed an 85AMP alternator on.  There is no reason not to do it.  It won't "blow fuses".  It supplies power, the bike uses what it needs.

There are a couple of places to get one (including amazon where I got mine).

http://www.sears.com/lactrical-new-lactrical-high-output-85amp-alternator-for/p-SPM11756116919

I paid $129 for mine.  EXTREMELY happy with it.  Be careful when backing bolts out.  There are only 3 bolts that hold it on and you do not want to twist off one of the wrong two.  My Mechanic twisted off the third that is on the "side".  Fortunately it wasn't really needed.  Also, save your old gasket.  We found that it still fit better than the one that came with the new unit.

I had to put it on  because the OEM alternator was not generating enough current on the road and at stop lights the drain on the battery from my fog-lamps was so great that the batter would die on long rides.  Thank goodness for being able to push-start the thing in second gear.

I have put 3000 miles on the 85Amp alternator in the last 6 months.  Love it.

Do you realize you are responding on an almost 3-yr-old thread?  We actually discussed this topic earlier this month.
