It`s coming from the alternator side of the engine. Maybe behind the alternator.
This happens only when the engine is cold, and dissapears after less than one minute.

I`m not 100% sure, but I dont think it comes from the clutch.
Could it be the chain to the oil pump?

Any ideas?

Thanks  cooldude

My Interstate has rattled when cold since I bought it with 6,800 miles.  The noise disappears quickly as the engine warms.  I've owned the bike for 9 years, and it now has over 93,000 miles.  It used to worry me but now I ignore it.

I've had the heat shield, located beneath the foot pegs, rattle. I don't remember much but I tightened things up and may have pulled the heat shield out a little bit (bent) and that fixed it.

I doubt it is the oil pump chain, I had the guard on the chain come loose a couple years ago, noise got worse as the bike warmed up. Fix was the bolts on the guard had come loose. Must have been put together on a Friday at 10 min before quitting time.  crazy2

Problem solved. It was the alternator.

Glad to hear you found it.
