In my attempt to remove alternator, I had read that loosening the centercover was a good idea.  I took out the bolts on either side, that go to the frame.  Out dropped a spacer type piece, and not my key wont move the seat release.  This is exactly what I was trying to avoid.  Where does the damn thing go?  I haven't even started removal of the alternator, it's take a bit of time to just uninstall all the chrome covers and stuff.  Hope this isn't an indication how the rest of the job will go.    tickedoff

Sounds like its just a collar that goes between the frame and the wing of the center cover.....#17 (IS) or #19 (STD) on the fish for "seat" on the HDL page

I'm an idiot that shouldn't be trusted with tools.  That spacer must have fallen out when I took the bolt off the one side, all is well.  The seat release is working now, must not have turned the key hard enough.  Also got the alternator out, not as hard as some said.  Just patience and wiggling.  The one connector was full of soot and crap, but since it was turning, doubt if that is the issue.  Taking it to a place Monday to have it checked before I get a new one.  Hope this solves the issue, I need to ride.

remember how you angled it to get it out. Because you going to need to angle it just that way to get it back in.

taking it out is rarely a problem...but wait until you try to put it back in!!!  5 minutes out, 1-1/2 hours back in for me.....good luck

I read many warnings about the difficulty of installing the alternator. I made myself watch and remember the angles removing the alternator. It's been a couple of years but I believe I stuck the rear of the unit into the open space first and then lowered the the left side down and forward into position.
It makes you say WOW that was easy Smiley

Glad it was simple, but now Im curious..........I never remember seeing that collar (spacer) on mine and I have had the center panel completely out a couple times..........but Hey, everything works just fine so either its there or I really don't need it that much

Ok, It was bugging me.....I took a bolt out and solved the issue (I think)  The collar, if its an aluminum looking thing shaped like a little hat, it goes directly under the head of the bolt so the flat part that is like a washer gives the bolt head a metal surface to tighten against instead of grinding away at the plastic.

I just never gave it much attention because I just naturally removed it along with the bolt and it always stayed together.

Next mystery
