So I bought the shiny desmog kit from RedEye and was very pleased with the install. Didn't have too much trouble putting back the air box, tank and connections.
But.... it runs like crap, hard to start - needs constant throttle to keep revs or it dies. bucks like a drunk mule above 2k rpm.
In the instructions it talks about removing lines 21 and 24 each going to a tee that swivels between carbs 4 and 6 on the left side and 3 and 5 on the right side - it doesn't mention plugging these (which I did)
Subsequent research lead me to Tim Skelton's site where he mentions not to plug these. But his article is about a California model - do all Valks have this tee or did my previous owner do a partial desmog (removing the vapor canister) leading me to believe i didn't own a Cali model ?

Any ideas?

It's late, so I plan on removing the plugs tomorrow.

I don't have my directions right in front of me, but I recently did a Redeye shiny desmog, and I recall one T that went between two carbs, but not 4 of them.  Mine was not a Cali bike, so can't help you there, but after the desmog, there shouldn't be any T's any longer, just caps on all but one carb, which has the vacuum line for the gas tank.

Yes, I have all intake manifold nipples plugged except for #6 which is vacuum for petcock.
These lines were above the intake manifolds where the carbs are, between aforementioned carb locations.
I left the 6 into 1 drain lines alone as they were not mentioned in the instructions. But some mention plugging theses as well. I'm so confused  Cheesy

Did you put the plug in the bottom of the airbox?

Based on the rel lack of iformation my 1st guess would be you DO NOT have the air box on correctly.

I'd say ya got a rubber tube not totally on on 1 or all of the air box mounts.

I'd suggest getting a mirror, flashlight and a whole great big box of patience and look it all over again.

Best of luck.

Thanks RJ, I was thinking the same thing - though I did use a mirror and looked behind every one of them.  Just dreading taking off all that stuff again but I have to get that beauty back on the road. Just finishing up a cup a Joe and I'll get cracking!

Don't take it all off again! No need to go backwards. Continue to use your inspection mirror and verify that the air box hoses are firmly seated all the way down on the carb intakes. Make sure there are no crimps or places that air could leak into the carbs. It is really easy to have the air box seated incorrectly so that the front two carbs are barely contacting the air box hoses, or vis-versa with the back two carbs.
The shiny desomg kit also covers the 6 holes that the pipes (silver pipes that went to the pair valves) lead into in the engine block. MAKE SURE that those holes are completely and securely blocked closed.
The other common leak place is the 5 nipples on the chrome down tubes that used to have vacuum lines on them. The piton-b plugs that are sent with the kit, though very good and long lasting, are rather soft and very easy to puncture. Make sure none of those are punctured. You should only have one remaining vacuum line from the down tube #6 that goes to the petcock. Check that this line is in good repair and has no holes and is firmly seated.
Since you removed the tank, verify that the vent hose is not crimped. Open the gas cap with your spare key and run the bike with the gas cap open. If that fixes it, its a crimped vent hose.
Make sure that the drain tube (it is the clear tube exiting the bottom of the bike at the swing arm just in front of the rear tire). There will be 3 hoses here. One should have a plastic cap on it. If there is no cap, this is another place that air can get in. If the cap is in place, remove it and let the "stuff" drain out. Then replace it.
If you had the plug wires off, make sure they are all back on the correct plugs. They are numbered.
Also, if you took the ECM module off to make the job easier, make sure that the screw used to replace it is the silver screw, not a black one. There is a ground attached at that point and if the wrong screw is used you will not have a proper ground and the bike will run like crap.
That's all I can think of for now.
Good luck.

You don't have to take it all off again. First check to see if any of the rubber intakes are curled up on the edge of the carbs. If so, remove the hose clamp on top of the carb and lift the front of the rubber hose. Run a small but long screwdriver around the top edge of the carb and it will roll the back edge over the top of the carb as it's supposed to be.

Do not plug the two vents on the carbs. One on each side. That sounds like you problem to me. They are between 3 and 5 and 4 and 6 carbs on the top runners. They will swivel and you should point them down so no water gets in them or put a hose on them and point them down.

Thanks all,
Big Mike, I took off the caps on the vent tubes and replaced with hoses joined to an open tee.

nogrey, bad ground at the ecm module sounds promising because now it won't start - although I didn't touch it or the spark wires. All I get is a loud click noise. I did notice Fri night when I tried starting, it did the click noise several times and then hesitated and failed several times before turning over really good - when I turned it off it was running (poorly, but running) I removed gas tank to check for any crimps and found none - all hoses and vent tubes are good with plenty of clearance, all vacuums sealed with #6 used as my vacuum for petcock. Reseated air box and spent a long time with mirror and light and know for a fact they are on there good and tight.
I did notice a lot of wandering wires along the tank that were annoying me.
Enough for tonight, going to break out the multi meter tomorrow and check the ecm wires.
Hopefully that's all it is.

Make sure all the coils are still connected, it is easy to knock the connections on the front coil off while wrestling with the airbox. Your new symptom could be any number of problems but seems to be the starter switch or relay most often (assuming the battery is good) from my limited experience.

I am not an expert whatsoever, so take my suggestion with that in mind.  It sounds to me that you need a new battery.  When the battery goes bad, the bike runs on only a few cylinders.  Since you said it will not start, you may want to check the battery.

FIXED Cheesy cooldude  !!!!!!

Thank you all, I love this site! So much knowledge - I created several problems with mucking around - I did in fact knock a wire off the front coil. Also the wiring was/is sub par - people in there adding stuff and running wires willy nilly - as an electronics guy that sh*t drives me batty!! - cleaned up the wires but I have to get back in there at another time for major wiring overhaul.
She is running tip top!
Thanks again for all the help!
