Ok, enough of these distractions! This is the Valkyrie RIDERS Cruiser Club. So I'm thinking we need a good challenge to bring us back to what's really important! My dilemma is whether to make this challenge on mere quantity or on quality as well.
Huh? What'd she say?
Let me clarify...
In a "quantity" challenge, the winner would be determined strictly by the total miles ridden during the challenge timeframe
A "quality" challenge might be a bit more interesting. Total mileage would be one factor, BUT there would be some other factor, such as number of states, or national parks, or something along those lines. The two factors would be weighted to determine the winner.
This challenge would start, oh say, Monday'ish and would end at IZX Closing Ceremonies.
So vote you preference!

I am afraid I would not win either. But Riding in Phoenix in July and August is worth as much as any snow riding...  I think Quantity is the only way to go. Without a panel of judges from all the states at least. And to try to assemble that panel mught be hard... |

Award(s) for quantity...
Award(s) for quality...
Award(s) for quantity and quality...
Say, most miles. Most state parks or some other metric....or some combination of all the above.
State capitals? County seats in your state? Route 66?
Maybe an iron butt recognition for those who complete such an endeavor between now and IZX?
Lets hear some ideas.

To paraphrase "Quality is in the eye of the beholder" Each has his(her) own definition.
I'll never " qualify" for quantity, especially now, but I definitely have many quality rides stored in my memory. It is a sign of these "modern" times that I must "qualify" that statement by saying that the word memory in this case refers to the part between my ears.
One of the best stored memories is the one when I rode the unfinished BRP in 1949. There are many others.
I would suggest that for the quality achievement, the riders would submit ONE narrative that describes their best ride of the year. Previous published material of the same or other years does not qualify. (Sorry Daniel, we have to level the playing field). The Admin then would pick the best of ten narratives and the VRCC members would vote on them.
Yeah, I know, quantity is much easier to qualify.
That's why I value quality above quantity. I'm basically lazy.

I don't know how many of yall remember Mellow from Texas, but he use to run a website and there were "quality" and "quantity" compeitive challenges.
Examples:
1. Photo of your bike in front of all the different county court houses, remember there are 254 counties in Texas
2. Photo of your bike with sign of each Texas State Parks
3. Texas Ghost Towns
4. Number of States and etc...you get the picture...
But each category was a different contest.
So maybe the VRCC can have different contest that would allow for more than one winner and help the northern riders compete, maybe most mile in a month, most lakes visited - Minnesota could win!!
Anyway just a thought...FB

I was thinking along those lines, (Scary I know) And some riders that frequent this board depending on location of IZX, can't make the trip. (Money, time off ect.) But I guess since some of us really can only do 1 long ride of the year it would be hard to not include IZX. As the purpose of this challenge after all is to get Valk Pilots out and riding. Another question though? Do you really want to add more work to your already exhausting tasks? Judging all this?

Ha! Scott beat me to it. This is supposed to be a riding competition, NOT an essay contest. And just to clarify about IZX... you don't have to attend IZX to compete or win, I was simply choosing that as an end date. However, we would like to annouce the winners at IZX closing ceremonies... which would mean the cut-off date would have to be earlier than I stated before. Perhaps IZX opening cermonies instead. |

I say quality of the ride and not quanity(miles). To me, the ride is more important then the miles. The 100 mile ride to the CBR is just as important as the 1100 miles ride to Sturgis.

We do a rally and award the most miles traveled to get there so long as they left with the purpose of ending at the rally. They could live next door and travel to CA and back and count it. That would encourage us to get out and meet new family.

Pics at parks, pics at state line signs, I dunno. Just my 2cent.

I have ridden in temps as cold as 17 below -- electric gloves, thinsulate, many layers, etc. The problem with Pheonix in July and August is you cannot wear anything to keep you cool. I now understand completely, and I have to say that Pheonix heat is far more difficult. I am home now in the 97 degree 90 percent humidity of Southern Illinois, the 114 degree dry heat is hotter than it is here. |
