It's on the centerstand and I am sitting on a short stool, but you may have a good idea there.  I will try just sitting on my arse and see if I have a better line of sight.  Thanks, Neil!

One of these days I will just admit, I'm a bad mechanic.  The old girl has never been back to the dealer since brand new, hate to break my record now  Wink

I pulled and replaced mine twice in the same weekend last Sept so I know what you're going thru! My bike doesn't have a center-stand & I don't have a lift so I laid down on my back next to the bike & did it. Not fun but it will go back in! Removal was aided by a pickle fork I had from doing the ball joints on my truck. Reinstall requires holding your tongue at the proper angle & side of your mouth!  Grin

Good luck!

I'm technically in lower MI, but only 100 miles from the bridge to the U.P.

I'm going to try again in a couple days. This is getting ridiculous.

I appreciate the generous offer of support, Zots.  But I would never ask anyone to travel any distance to help me do something, relatively simple, that I should be able to do myself.  I did talk to a local guy that I used to have work on my other bikes, he is willing to come out to the house and give it a look.  I told him I want to give it one more try myself.  Something about all this makes no sense, as I mentioned before, I have done other much more complicated work on this bike.

Thanks again, all!

Well you've struggled long enough, I'm retired, love road trips (only a 10 hour drive for me through the UP) will load my hyd table lift, tools and head out early Thursday morning in pickup.  Keep me informed....... Hope your buddy can help, it shouldn't be that hard to do...... especially after all the trying you did.  If connected disconnect all wires that can be done later, you need to be able to turn the whole unit freely.  Anixous to hear "its in" !!

A ten hour drive offer, to help someone you never met, is amazingly generous.   This club
is something else.  But between the bike mechanic and myself, it will go in one way or another
I am looking at my SawsAll...a little trim to that cross member...  Wink

But thanks again for being willing to help.

Keep that firkin sawzall out of there.

If you get that desperate, I'll load Amber up and head out your way.   My son might pitch a bitch cause i'm taking one of his Tech's, but who cares.

Follow that series of pictures that was posted and the one that is missing is like using a stick to aligh things up.

Once Alt is in that position, do a slight twist and kind of roll it upwards t the same time.

It should roll right into the hole and be ready for bolts to be attached.

Make damn sure all your wires are connected or you will be cussing again to get it out and back in.

Don't bother asking how I know that.

As Forrest Gump would say:
“That's all I have to say about that.”

"Make damn sure all your wires are connected or you will be cussing again to get it out and back in."

I honestly could not wire mine up until I was on the step before sliding it forward into the Motor...
I even had to take off the wiring hardware on the back of the alternator.
Yes it was difficult to wire it up but still had some wiggle room to get it in..

What was different on my bike, I upgraded to a Interstate alternator and I had added the belly fuel tank down below a few years ago, which means I had more hoses in the way.

I really thought it would take 2 hours to do the swap...WRONG.... 4 hours a trip to the store for BEER so when it was done, I could drink to forget about it...

Hang in there.. we ALL have felt your pain...

Rhinor, I'm a little curious as to why you said you "upgraded" to an I/S alternator.

The IS alternators have a different ROTOR, thus I am led to believe that it has a higher amperage rating to handle the high current draw of the electrical extras on the interstate. Radio, CB, dash..

Also this winter, I am doing a tear down and will be installing the Factory Fairing, radio, harness and dash.

My bad, you're right RJ, after looking at my spare alternator don't disconnect the small wires that go in the back of the unit, just the main big one.  I misunderstood that the bigger connection was made, as mentioned before that connection can be made from the right side with extensions etc..... been awhile since I did this I guess....

I guess it is mention before , but loosen the center cover behind the alternator gives you a bit more work space ...

Therapist, I know your pain.  I changed the alternator on my Interstate a couple years ago, and it was not the relatively easy process for me either.  Hard as hell to get it out, and nothing but trouble to get it back in.  I ended up using my bench grinder to shave down the corners on the rotor fins, just a little bit, just enough to allow the alternator to make the turn and slide into place.  I know this isn't recommended, but it's better than the sawzall idea.
