Do many I/S riders install a taillight assembly on their bike? It seems to me that would be desirable from a safety standpoint. Is all the wiring harness in place for the install?

I've seen quite a few, including mine. Previous owner did it though so I'm not sure how hard to do it is.

No, it is not just plug and play.  I believe you tap the existing rear wiring but still must tap something under the right side cover.

EDIT:  I have run/turn/brake lights on my signals (with red lenses), so that may be what comes from the rt side cover (along with the module).   This came on the bike.

I have one to put on mine when I put her back together but will just tap into the existing wiring.

It does help on a Interstate to have the extra tail light. It can be hard to see the brake lights on the truck.

It's set up to only go on with the Brakes but it really shows up.  don't have another picture of it lit up.

The Standard/Tourer taillight - turn signal sub-harness can be retrofitted to an I/S and plugs directly into the main wiring harness.

If you add a taillight to your Interstate, you'll need to file the trunk bracket's front crossmember slightly so the edges of the seat retainer won't gouge the light. About 1/4" off each edge, done at a 45 degree angle is all that's required. Give the filed edges a coat of paint to protect against rust.

My opinion is it works best to splice into the lines leaving the Interstate harness intact.  That way you can have both.

The OE std-tourer tail light fits underneath the IS trunk just fine, unless you have the CB under there.

No filing on my brackets was necessary.

The light shows up very well, whether 1157 bulb or led array, because it's nearly always in the shade under the trunk.

After ridding behind an IS using a Hyper Light, I would add that instead of the OEM std/tourer brake light.

Cost should be around the same for the lights, but no additional purchase of the wire harness.

On both of mine, unfortunately, this was NOT the case. Especially with the first one which did gouge the light. Sad

Huh.  Did you use all new OE Valk parts, or used other Honda tail light assemblies?

The first conversion employed a used taillight/gasket/harness assembly from a trike conversion. The base motorcycle was the same as mine ('00 Tourer).

The second employed new parts ordered from one of the online fiches. The bike in question - a '99 Tourer - got a set of fender rails and a donor trunk from my '01 I/S.

I'm going to add another trunk to the SuperValked I/S, and it now has an OEM taillight installed. I'll check bracket to light clearance before installing the trunk and update this post accordingly re: fit.
