I have a 99 valk tourer, I have a water leak that is apparently leaking from between the water pump assembly and the assembly cover. Does that sound like the it is just the gasket or have there been other issues.

Most times leaks like that turn out to be a leaky hose connection.
I'd suggest if the leak is not serious, and not a hose, to put
a teaspoon or two of a stop leak additive. That ought to get it
fixed with no deleterious side affects.

AS RickyD said. Look at hoses. The prime suspect (believe it or not) is the upper hose to the thermostat housing. When that leaks, because of the bike on the side stand, the water pump is the lowest thing in the path of the trickle and it will usually drip from there. To check that connection get a flashlight and look up just in front of the carb bank on the left side. You can see the thermostat housing. That housing will be all shiny if its wet and then you know whats leaking. If through your determination it is REALLY leaking out of the water pump, that is your signal that the water pump is shortly in need of repair. I wouldn't put any additive in there, just replace the water pump.

The reseivor is empty bone dry, but radiator us full. I saw the drip forming in between the cover and the pump. If it is up top where would it be leaking from?

Try to loose the drain bolt then retighten there copper gasket washer, all it just need loose it then retighten and give it a try.... If from upper rad hose by thermostat leaking usually dripping left side behind valve cover area that run down.

Still leaking and appears to definitely be coming from the water pump assembly. I can not see any other leaks from any of the other hoses,

I had the same leak last year, easy fix. Swapping out the water pump isn't a tough job at all,,, even I was able to do it correctly the first time. Might as well put fresh coolant in the systems since you have to drain it anyway...

Anything other than draining the old oil out first that I need to know about? Does anything need to be lined up special on the pump when putting it in?

To minimize the chance of breaking a bolt removing the water pump....do this: First warm up the bike....go for a ride around the block Next get that 10mm socket on a short extension and put it on each bolt then tap on the end of the extension with a small hammer 10 or 20 times. NOW, try to remove the bolts

Don't forget to drain the oil before removing the pump.

Hose Pick! Cheap tool when used right will allow you to remove the hoses without using bad words. The hose pick and A little white lube will also help get the hoses back on easier just make sure you put the hose clamps back on the hoses before you slip the water pump in place.

Sorry I posted from my iphone and it didn't all show up. I think I got my cheap set from harbor freight and my good set at work from sears.
after you loosen the clamp you gently insert the hose pick between the hose and water pump and gently work it around the hose this will break the seal between the hose and pump and allow the hose to slip off easier. you can also use it to help slip the hose back on.
