An impact wrench will zip the nut right off, and it will pull right out..it is still available. don't forget the drive shaft as well.

This is what you need. I use ServiceHonda at http://www.servicehondapsn.com/fiche_select.asp. For some reason the 1997 drive shaft is listed at 2X the price of later years but the part numbers are the same. I think it's just a typo on their part.

Drive Shaft 40201-MZ0-A00 ~$50
Ring Stopper 40221-MB0-000 ~$3
Oil Seal 91261-ME9-005  ~$7.50
Pinion Joint 41410-MN5-000 ~$35

I thought removing the pinion cup would be a big problem.  I was able to get a hold of impact wrench and a strap wrench.  NO problem.  Just hit the trigger and it came off.  Though my son did help out holding the strap wrench.  Make sure the oil holes are cleaned out after removing the cup.

Putting the spring on the other end of drive shaft is fun.  Check out several ideas on holding spring by using search.   I did/do use vice grip pliers to hold spring down.

The first pinion cup I ever took off was REALLY HARD... I even invented a machine
for it...

All the other ones I ended up taking off were easy to get off...

Hi,  can anyone tell me the size of the nut holding on the pinion cup?  I don't have a socket to fit it and can't seem to find the size in the manual.

thanks

22MM is the size.   I looked in several places in town before I found that impact socket.  Probably didn't need it, could have used a normal socket

I used a regular plain ole American size socket, but, I can't remember what size it was. I was thinking it was 1 3/8", but, again, not sure.
But, a rattle gun will spin it right off and back on. I only removed it to see about these oil holes that are supposed to let the rear end oil into the cup.
I've never had oil in the cup, so, the last time I still greased it as usual and added a bit of rear end oil to it also. Haven't yet had it back apart.

I just used a 1"x3/4" Sch 40 PVC slip/slip reducer fitting from Home Depot to put the spring, stop ring & circlip back on the drive line. I used a chainsaw sharpening file to enlarge teh opening to just fit over the end of the drive shaft. Put spring on, put the stop ring on, put the circlip on, then put the PVC fitting on. Push down on the PVC fitting, flange on bottom, and everything easily snaps into place!

98 shaft will work fine and much less expensive.

I used plastic tie straps to compress the spring just enough to remove the retainer clip. It worked well.
