As you are sitting on the bike, at the lower left corner of the radiator is a switch with a single wire connected. Have the ignition switched on and pull the wire off the switch and ground it to something near, if the fan starts spinning the fan motor is ok and it's odds on your sender switch is faulty, if as you suspect you fan never cuts in.

just to be clear and I may be wrong but ground the connector the wire came off of not the wire itself.  Is that right?

No mate, the wire.

The switch merely completes the circuit at the pre-set temperature and activates the fan.

Last year, i was in a remote part of Cambodia when my Valk started pushing water out the radiator cap.

The fan was not working, i done the above and deduced that the switch was faulty, i was lucky enough to find a length of household type wire laying at the side of the road, so stripped and doubled over one end and wedged it into the spade connector on the sender/fan wire and wound the other end around one of the intake bolts. The fan is then working all the time and got me home with no problems.

The new sender switch was bloody expensive though !!!!
