Hey y'all. I am in Sturgis, and the speedo on my 99 interstate is spending more time not working than working. It'll seemingly randomly go from 0 to however fast I am going. It does not seem to be associated with bumps or anything else. This just started last night. Everything else seems to be working, except for the odometer with displays, but does not advance mileage while the speedo is at 0.

Is this an brainer that you can tell me... "do this" I and it's fixed ?

Thanks folks!

I don't have a "do this" and it is fixed answer.  But, I would suggest you check the wire from the speedo sending unit at the wheel and follow it up the left fork tube and then up to the connector which is located under the left fairing speaker cover.  Getting that speaker cover unscrewed might be a challenge, but the connector for the sending unit is located there.  I would check for a pinched, broken, exposed wire and then check to make sure the connector is completely snapped into place.  Aside from that, the sending unit might be "heading south" on you.

Is the screw holding the sending unit snug? Is the wire snug on the back of the speedometer? You MIGHT be able to roll the fairing forward by loosening the bolts in the solid holes-lower and loosening the slotted bolts-upper-then roll fairing forward without removing. Hope you locate and repair the problem. RIDE SAFE.

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the Hall sensor { the black box on your front wheel }. I disassembled mine and had an electronics friend look at it. Non- repairable was the verdict.

I think the new one was $65.00.  Installed the new box and everything went back to normal.

Had the same intermittent problem.  Replaced the pickup unit on the front wheel.  Problem solved.

If you do decide to get parts to fix it, the Honda dealer in Rapid City is 'A' # 1.

A few years ago on my Wing he bailed me out of traffic on I-90 about 4 miles from Sturgis.   This was during Bike Week also.

Came out, hauled me in, stuck me right on a lift and had me out the door in about an hour after arrival at the store.

I assume they are still that much governed towards the traveler.   NO, I was not there for Bike Week.   I was headed over into Wyoming at the time.    Make that WESTERN Wyoming.   Teton National Forest to be exact.

I had it happen a couple of times to me. I believe my issue was moisture related, had washed the bike the day before a longer ride and had a intermittent speedo issue during the ride. The next day, after drying out,  no issues at all.

Recently I pulled the front wheel and found the small screw on the "black box" loose. I think the loose screw was allowing some water into the box and causing the speedo to stop working.

Just my 2 cents
