Hi there fellas, hoping to make tomorrows ride here in FL, i bought a new YUASA YTX14 BS battery, follwed the instructions yesterday morning and hooked it to battery tender Jr at noon,  24 hours later today at 11 the light on charger was solid green, took it out and put it on bike, fired right up, went to home depot six miles away came out and voila, light on start switch didnt even crank, a freind came in his cage, before jump starting it, push the starter and it crank but no go, jump started it and fired up again, died when i down shifted couple miles b4 home, he was following me we jumped it again and it got me home,..took it out  and put it on a tender till tomoorw and see what happens...
WOULD BATTERY TENDER BE ENOUGH TO CHARGE IT ANYWAY????
Facts
Bike sat foe a month while i went to see my ill mother and was not hooked to a battery tender when i was gone.
all fuses are good,
the ground from battery to frame is solid not loose,
connectors solid,
could it be a regulator somewhere or alternator which i am dreading   hope not
Any Help is appreciated.

Larue - batteries do have a good long service life provided they are kept at or near full charge.
Try a low and slow charge using a battery tender.
Main reason a battery tender (and a lot of chargers these days) would not or will not start a charge on a dead or near dead battery is that most newer chargers have to see a minimum threshold voltage before they will kick in. You can fool it by hooking up a set of jumpers from a good battery to the dead battery momentarily while the charger is also hooked up and it will start the charge process. Let the battery charge for a day or so on the tender and see what you have.

Pappy gave you some good advice Larue.  Remove it and charge it up.  Take it to your local parts house like Advance/Discount Auto etc.  They can load test it and let you know it's condition.

Check the acid levels. If low, refill with distilled water. Then, do as others advice. Wink
I purchased two of these. So far so good.

Larue I have been sitting here on the edge of my seat just waiting to hear the results of your battery problem.  Any resolution yet?

Larue

Once started a battery voltage check is needed.  That will tell us more about what is happening.  Jack has one (voltmeter) that connects to the battery tender plug which many use to store their bike.  If you have a plug as described maybe try to get Jack to stop by and get a reading with the bike running at idle then high idle (2,000 rpm).  Report the readings here.

It is possible your new battery is bad.  Testing at the Autozone/Advance Auto/etc. is another thing to consider.

Gil, the battery got charged and picked up at autozone today Abd it read good battery 100% 13.49 at the counter, put it in after midday and rode the bike for just few miles around the area, parked for 5 hours and a freind of mine tested it again on bike and now it read 12.03!!!!!!!

Maybe the alternator is not charging the battery.
Can your friend check the amps as the bike is running in order to check the alternator?

Let me know if you need a hand and we will figure something out.

Can you get a reading while running at idle and then again at 2000 rpm (or so)?  Looks like your alternator may not be charging.  Another thing could be a drain on the battery while the bike is off.

While in Alaska the front desk called me to report the driving lights were on.  Ran the battery down in a few hours.  Disconnected them and when I got home found the relay for them leaked and was a solid chunk of rust inside.  You may have a similar issue.

Thanks again guys it appears battery somehow not charging when bike running or power being drained somewhere. Where do you perform a voltage check on both alternator and regulator as someone mentioned b4..

Best place to start is right on the battery.  Get the voltage for not running, then running at idle, then at 2000 rpm.  Three readings to get and post.

Battery reading
At autozone fresh 13.49
On bike not running 11.16
Running 11.76
Running at 2000 rpm 12.03

It is not charging.  Check the 55A charge fuse first.  It is not a plug in fuse like you might expect.  It is a flat fuse that is held in place by screws to the right of the row of smaller fuses.  This fuse is wired in line between the alternator output wire and the battery.  If it is not blown or open then your alternator is probably bad.

Yep, looks like the alternator is bad.  You may be able to just replace the brushes.  That costs less, just takes some knowledge.  Seems like there is a report of a bad alternator each week.  Good information on the repair in the tech section.

I am out of town for a week or so.  Will watch for updates.

Larue, I was afraid that was the problem when I emailed you a couple days ago to check the voltage across the battery when running. Check the fuse as suggested, but if the voltage changes then I'm sure the fuse is ok. If it was blown, the voltage across the battery wouldn't increase when it's running. How many miles are on the bike? And remember, if it's just the brushes that can be done yourself. If not and you want to replace it, get one for a Wing....they're cheaper and are the same unit. Just have to loosen the bolts holding it together and turn the housing to match the Valk alternator.

Everyone voted its the alternator, so ordered new one tonight $154
And also brushes to fix the old and keep it as a spare. one provided that's all it needs, just don't want it all apart and find out its toast and wait again to get a new one, but as you all know for the life of me I can't fix jack lol..,. So if you all miss me and wanna see me on Saturday ride, I need a volunteer mechanic or I will pick one..,, nah not a threat..,thank you all for the input.

After I put an aftermarket alternator on my '99 {same problem as you} I took the old one to a local electrical repair place hoping for a cheap/quick fix for a back up. Guy took it apart & said what typically fails is the stator which cost as much as you paid for the alternator you have coming.
Did you get yours from E-bay, California Electrical or some name like that??

Eddie I  bought it last night on eBay and the merchant is based out of Atlanta, I gotta delivery email from UPS this afternoon to expect it tomorrow. That's pretty fast .
By the way John the bike has 38k on it, also read on tech board that many alternator had failed on bikes with 20k plus...bizarre!!!!
