I just got done with a final drive changeout - BIG thanks to Silvervalk for his help and the use of his garage and knowledge - and I have the carcass of the bad final drive & flange sitting in my garage.  Is there anything salvageable on these things?  Can it be rebuilt?  If so, I'll stick it in the classifieds - along with some other leftover goodies (that are in very good shape) from the final drive episode.  Stay tuned.

Yes it is rebuildable. Parts can run more than the cost of a good used one, but don't throw it out. There's only so many parts available for these old cruisers. A couple of factory tools are needed and some better mechanical knowledge is needed. BigBF can do them if you want to pay shipping costs.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Fudgie, just the spline teeth are worn out on both the flange and the drive unit.  I was riding around on it with no problems for a while, although I didn't want to trust it going out of range of my AAA or AMA memberships.  Recently when I had a new tire put on the back the mech showed me the splines, and they won't last long.  Other than that, it's in fine shape.  Doesn't leak or anything and all the parts are there.  Last night when I drained the gear oil from the unit the oil still looked good.  I was going to take some pics of it this week to post.

I also have available a drive shaft & rubber boot, rear axle, rear brake caliper, swingarm, rear brake rotor, AND a rear wheel (with dampers and bearings), all in excellent shape (I apologize to the management if this post is in the wrong place.  I promise to get the info in the classified as soon as I can!)
