Well I finally invested in a new compression tester, my old one wouldn't hold pressure any longer. I know the feeling!

Did a comp. test on the right side; #3 was a bit low at 110, #1 was less than 10 higher. I did the compression test on a stone cold engine, you're really supposed to do it on a fully warmed up engine. One thing I noticed was both plugs were running the same in appearance, but what caught my eye was #3 plug was covered in some greasy film, so was #1. Looked in the boot and it was full of what appeared to be die-electric grease...loads of it. Why on earth do people do that, smearing contacts all over with it and in this case it covered the plugs as well. It's die-electric, meaning it doesn't conduct. It took me a good 30 min. to clean all that crap out of the boots after disassembling them then using Goof Off to get rid of it.

Put it back together and the bike actually runs better. No wonder, my guess is half or more of the spark wasn't getting through. I'll be running it some more to see if it settles down more, then possibly look at rocker arm clearance. Should be zero if the proper shim is in place, these are different heads but the entire head was changed without dismantling it so the clearance should be OK. Another day for all that.
