I must be a real Mr. Doomazz,

Why do I have to extend the fuel tube on a 1311-CH to use all the reserve capacity?

Isn't that backerds?  Isn't the reserve fuel down below the top end of the tube? When you  switch to reserve don;t you open the tube up to the lower holes  in the tube?

Also, would the OEM screen fit over  a modified Pingel so I don't have to install an in-line filter?

Somebody please espplain to me.....I just don't get this reserve thing!

OK, I'll try but might be clear as mud when I'm done.  Wink First,  keep in mind there is no "reserve tank" built into the gas tank. When not on Reserve, the fuel is taken in through the top of the feeder tube. The lower the top of that tube is, the less gas there is left in the tank to feed the Reserve intakes at the bottom of the tube when you make the switch.

As for the OEM screen....no, it won't fit over the larger extension tube that is soldered onto the Pingel feeder tube.

I just don't get all the concern about reserve size.  I have a Pingel and I know if I let it go on reserve I have about 12 miles before Im walking.  So, I don't let it go on reserve unless I know there is a gas station right there.

Set the trip meter and get gas at 120, 130 whatever makes you happy and who cares how long the bike will go on reserve....its not like it gives you any more gas, you gots what you gots, you can go only so far and it matters not if its on "on" or "reserve"

If you're riding in west Texas on high speed roads with serious wind conditions, you care about the reserve size because MPG will suffer greatly and there are a lot more than 12 miles between gas stations.  Knowing there's a gallon left once I hit reserve lets me calculate how fast I'm burning through it and gives me a reasonable chance of getting to the next fill-up.

Ran out of gas traveling New Mexico roads. I know now how much the winds effect gas mileage.
Couldn't believe it happened. OEM tank and petcock.

I'm not ashamed to stop every 50 miles for gas in a unfamilar areas out west.  Cool

I have the pingel and I did no mods to it. You do the mod do a inline filter. Dont do the mod, you can or dont have to add the inline filter.

John you did a fine job at answering the initial question.  Why should the rest of us do the same.  You know wed all rather just let your answer stand so we can add opinions.  Sometimes other things are learned by both sides when free ideas are interjected.  That's called a conversation.

Chris, I realize that and my comment wasn't meant as a "dig."  I was more amused by it than anything.  cooldude

Ok, I understand this logic.  But...I installed Pingel a while back and now went back to the OEM.  I ran out of gas with the Pingel while in the open position.  I switched to reserve and it was still out of gas.  I filled it up and it took about 5 gallons to fill...........so, I figgered somehow the Pingel was not allowing me to use my reserve, or in other words the full capacity of the 6.9 gallons for my IS.
Maybe the reserve holes were plugged but when I pulled it out it seemed fine.

it's crazy. How can that be that you still have nearly 2 gals of gas? Is the feeder tube that far off.? If so why would anybody buy a Pingel?

Are you sure you are not turning it to the off position thinking it's reserve? On my 1311 pingle with access on the left side, all the way forward is off, middle is reserve, and all the way back is main tank capacity minus reserve.

I agree with Jim.
If you say your feeder holes were okay when you removed the unit then it had to be you.
Only other think I can think of is the possibility of an additional filter being added before the carbs or some kind of an uphill run of the fuel line between the unit and carbs.

Maybe this pic can help. This position is off, as Tom points out. My (vacuum) ping has worked fine since installation. Wish it had detents but other than that its fine.
