I'm looking at removing my IS fairing and going to a smaller ...something; still working on that... Looking at Partszilla as a basis, the 97 vs 2000 Tourer speedo's are over $120 difference in price, as well as slightly different part numbers. The tachs are also different numbers, although the price diff is only $4. Anybody have both a 97 and a 2000 to compare? Thanks

The speedo and tach operate differently on the two years/models you mention. To begin with, the I/S was only made from '99-'01. The I/S speedo is run with an electric pulse off the sender down on the left side of the front wheel. The '97...actually all models other than I/S, are mechanical and driven off the same spot on the front wheel. You can't compare the I/S to the other models when it comes to instrumentation.
As for removing/replacing the fairing on an I/S with a different type: WHY? If you want to go through all that, you should have just bought a Tourer and added a fairing. What you're proposing you'll end up spending more $$ for no improvement. The connectors are different, the fairing mount is specific to the I/S, the wiring is different in many places. It's easier to add a bat-wing type fairing to a bike without one, than to remove a fairing from a bike built around an existing fairing with the thought in mind to change everything. I go back to my initial question: WHY? ???
I say at this point leave it alone, or sell it and buy a decent Tourer and add the fairing of choice.

Thanks I know you mentioned in another post that your IS fairing doesn't like your 3 mile long, washboarded driveway because it vibrates. I suspect that the frame mount and/or the inner fairing mounting screws are loose or missing. A common problem on the IS inner fairing is that the brass bushings strip out. If this has happened and the PO just left the screws out or they can't be tightened, that might be your problem.

Actually John the speedo drives are the same. However the I/S has a transducer that counts the revolutions from the speedo drive and coverts them into electrical pulses, rather than transferring the revolutions through a cable to a analog speedometer.

Newer (don't remember what year it changed) speedo and tachs have red-ish/orange numbers. That's the ONLY difference that I'm aware of.

Same opinion: if you are going to the work of gutting an I/S, just instead do the job in a Tourer or Standard. It will be:
a) Easier; b) Cheaper; c) Will yield better results;

Note the color on this guy's guages.....
As I said, my '97 standard's guages are green. Honda changed the color of the numbers on the guages mid-model, but I'm not sure what year that they did that. Again, as far as I know, they're all the same except for the color of the numbers.

Yes, I know George, just trying to keep it simple to understand. It's the same mechanical driver mounted to the wheel & fork, just the pickup is different. I've installed a few I/S pickups on Tourers where the owner wanted an electronic speedo. Always have to install a Speedo Healer to make the match up though.

I don't think he's asking about Interstate guages. He's asking about tourer guages. I'm looking at removing my IS fairing and going to a smaller ...something; still working on that... Thanks gents. After talking to our local Honda dealer, they were pretty sure the only difference was color. So I ordered the 2000 parts to save the $120... Yep, I was talking Tourer gauges. As far as the IS vs Tourer, I'm soon (when the sub-frame and parts arrive, and I do some maintenance) putting a sidecar on the Valk. Wanted the IS (vs the Tourer) for the trunk, the big gas tank (my previous GL1200 tug went from 40 mpg solo to 25 mpg with the hack), and the fairing. I have an old school fiberglass Parabellum fairing on our GL1200, but was looking for just a bit more coverage. But the IS fairing is too good; I get no breeze. Unfortunately, in the week that I have been riding since I got it, temps during the day here have seldom dropped below 100. I'm cooking behind that fairing. I'll prolly keep it for winter (when I leave the house it has been 15 below), but for 9 months I'm gonna need some more breeze. I just ordered an 8" Cee Baily screen, hoping that makes a big difference. Will just have to see about the buffeting. As far as the work, heck, I enjoy the challenges. Google for "XR1200 Sidecar" - the orange and black one with the canine canopy is ours; that's our offroad rig I finished (mostly) last year - it now has a Wasp leading link.... I'd post a pic, but my Photobucket account is acting weird right now... I did fix part of the fairing rattle. There were indeed two screw mounts loose on EACH side of the fairing. Had to JB weld them in, and the vibes on our washboard are much reduced. Hmmm. Wonder what that Parabellum would look like on the Valk...

You'll be fine. The 97 & the 2000 standard speedos are interchangeable.
