Final drive oil: synthetic or mineral?
«

I have always put
mineral
oil SAE 90 in my BMW R100RT. It is hypoid type and exceeding API GL5 requirements.
Do you think it is also valid for the Valkyrie or should I better put a synthetic oil. The manual only says "hypoid SAE 80".
Thanks a lot in advance

Without trying to start an oil debate.....I can say with assurance, that hypoid gear oil you use in the BMW should work fine in the Valkyrie, HOWEVER, If you use that I would stick to the service interval in the manual which is like 8K or so, I really cant remember and am too lazy right now to look. If you go with synthetic you can confidentially go lots longer, so it will last as long as any rear tire. Changing the oil during tire changes is way easier (the drive being off the bike) than using hoses to fill the dang thing and making a mess all over the wheel and tire.
The last rear wheel I did and R/R on for a new tire was 25K miles on an Avon Cobra, the synthetic oil looked like new. Non-synthetic would have looked like tar

Service interval in the manual is 24K, and I agree with Chris that your BMW oil would be fine for Honda's recommended interval.

I once came into possession of a truly ratted-out final drive whose insides
seemed loose and and worn, lots of play when I turned the pinion cup.
It wouldn't surprise me if it came from a high mileage bike whose owner
never checked or changed the fluid...
I bet that if you keep the right amount of any kind or brand of oil
with a rating similar to "75W-90" in there, you'll be good to go. I've
used Honda oil in mine, and more recently, some Valvoline from
Advance that had the same rating/specs on its bottle as the Honda
oil...
