Mrs. TP and I are going to NY in Nov.  We would like to take a train ride for the day.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Some place that when we get off we can walk or take a cab.
Thanks.

Where will you be staying when you are in NY?  All Subway trains from the boroughs end up in Manhattan.  All Railroad trains from the suburbs wind up at Grand Central or Penn Stations.  Both railroad stations are right in midtown Manhattan and have an exhorbanant amount of things to see and do nearby.  Once in Manhattan, the subway is best and cheapest bet for getting uptown and midtown and downtown.  Going cross town, your best bet is walking or Taxicab.  November is a great time.  A light jacket and pair of jeans and good walking shoes and you are golden.  When walking, it is amazing at how much ground you can cover and not even realize it.

Downtown is Wall St, Chinatown, and what's left of Little Italy.  Just above that is SoHo (South Houston),,,,,great for shopping and viewing the arts.  North of Houston is Greenwhich Village....you'll never be bored there.  Going west is Chelsea.....more shopping and eating.  Midtown is the Empire State Building, theater district, restaurants galore, Rockerfeller Center, Hotels, Madison Square Garden (directly on top of Penn Station), Jewelry exchange.  Just above midtown is Central Park and all of the museums on the east and west sides of the Park.  Not much more going on on the east side of the park, but the west side is packed including Lincoln Center and upper West side eateries and shopping.  North of the park you're getting into Harlem which is changing daily and full of a rich history of music, brownstones, Columbia university.....

Thanks for respond.  We're staying at the The London NYC.  11/13 thru the 16th.  There are some things that we have not done in Manhattan.  We were thinking of a day trip Sat. to maybe CT or Atlantic City.  We will be there till Monday.

Lots of nice trips from NY by train. The Adirondack Amtrack is a nice one. Here is the link:
