You do know back in the day they called our Phat Gurls GW Valkyries dontcha? honda never called it that, only the uninformed did. only things our valkyries shared with the GW was the engine short block, cylinder heads and the u-joint. the valkyrie was made to be a cruiser with a in your face big engine with six carbs. The new GW-valkyrie as honda calls it, don't know what it is, except a stripped down GL1800 with different wheels and brakes. IMHO honda has lost its way ever since Mr. Honda passed away.

I like someones mantra that I saw posted once. Ride what you like, just don't run into me. I do not think anyone will look at a GW-Valkyrie and say what has been said by many, looking at The Phat Gurl for the fist time.... " damn... that's a big motor " I would like to know how many of us have heard that.

I'm still wondering if I would ever be able to take a stock GL1800 and strip it down to the point it would look like a cruiser?

would have to relocate the side radiators. to other post - all mag articles written when the valkyrie frist came out always stated about the motor being the focal point by them and passerbys.

Someone did and posted pictures here. It was probably in the General Section of the old (pre 2010) forum, and to my knowledge those posts are lost in cyberspace. I cannot remember the name, and I do not have any saved pictures. With regard to the original post, I too have observed the phenomenon. I have a 1982 Honda SilverWing, and CX/GL forum is 90% getting it running, keeping it running. We are turning into the same thing.

If it was possible to give the current 1800 the "X-Wing" treatment it would be a good thing.

I have to wonder if the 1800 might be the largest GW ever. Look how many cars have gone from a V8 to a turbo V6 (like Audi & BMW), or from a V6 to a turbo I4. With Honda's emphasis on everything 'green' I wouldn't be surprised to see a smaller Wing engine in the future, with 4 valve heads and/or a turbo.

IIRC, our Valks never sported the GW moniker ........... however, there was a Valkyrie Rune I was not impressed with the new Valkyrie 1800. As soon as I walked into my local shop, the Owner immediately walked me over to the new Valkyrie. It just did not do a thing for me, at all! The engine was all cover up, it just looked like any other "cookie cutter" bike made today....... Now a "Rune"......has always intrigued me. If I was to get any other bike under the "Valkyrie" moniker, it would be a Rune.

I have never seen a Rune around here. But found a Vid on U-tube of one..... Six into six, with baffles out........and a "darkside" tire that is quite impressive!

Got my first in-person look a the Goldwing Valkyrie a couple of weeks ago and I must say I was even less impressed with it than I had been just looking at the pictures. In a word, Fugly!
Too much plastic, horrible instrumentation, lousy signals ect. I what can you say about those side radiator pods – absolutely hideous. They look ever worse when sitting on the bike!
The only thing I didn't mind was the engine and rear fender.
While I respect the opinion of those whose like the new bike, personally, it's not for me and doesn't compare to the original. While I'm sure it's a find handling bike with lots of power, I don't consider it a Valkyrie myself. The salesman at Honda asked me what I thought of it and I told him straight up. I think he was a little surprised at what I had to say. I asked him if he had ever seen the original. Only in pictures he replied. He said he didn't understand why I didn't like it as the original Valkyrie was just a stripped down Goldwing as well. Obviously this guy didn't have a clue so I had to set him straight.
I also told him that as the owner of a GL1500 Goldwing, I wasn't too impressed with the first generation of GL1800 'Wing, although I have softened somewhat to it's styling. That being said, I added that the second generation GL1800 'Wing looked even worse. Again, in my opinion.
Having looked at the recently released images of the new 2015 anniversary Goldwing, I must say that I really wonder about who's making the decisions about styling at Honda. The seem to be getting further and further away from what many of us older riders are looking for. Ironic as many of these bigger machines are purchased by older riders. Maybe it's just me getting older and being stuck in the past but lately I've been looking with appreciation at many older bikes and missing that style of machine.
What I wouldn't give for Honda to come out with some modern technology wrapped up in a retro-style motorcycle.

"What I wouldn't give for Honda to come out with some modern technology wrapped up in a retro-style motorcycle." +1! I am hoping that a rumor I heard is true... That Honda is giving the 1800 a last hurrah for a couple years with all these different models before they redesign the motor and hopefully the Goldwing/Valk. I'll be keeping my 98 till they get their heads out of their as@#$. Side radiators!!!? The Harley guys must be laughing... Although that x-wing looks pretty good with em'

X-Wing. That's the one I was referring to. More photos here: X-Wing update picturesI'd seen this back when it was first done, impressive to cut a Wing down like that but what I find most interesting is the response from the posters in that link. Folks are talking like Honda should be listening, make a new Valk like that, etc. Guess what? That's exactly what they did. Notice the pods, the rear fender, etc....looks just like the new Valk doesn't it? Be careful what you wish you...you just may get it. As I've said before, the new Valkyrie and the 1800 Goldwings are mechanically superior to our "Classic" Valkyries with a lot of the features and improvements we've been asking for but for those of us that love the original, it just doesn't capture our soul. Just like the automobiles of today, lots of plastic and all sorts of technological gizmo's but they have lost their soul compared to the old solid hunks of iron we grew up with and loved. We have two choices, move on or stay with what we have. As for me, I'm still loving my classic Valkyrie(s) and am trying to collect enough bikes/parts to allow me to ride them till I am no more...
