What a difference a cleaning makes!

Just finished a three day project of pulling and rebuilding my carbs. They didn't look bad at all, but I ran them all through my Sharpertek ultrasonic cleaner and used Sharpertek's Shellac Buster carb solution. They came out looking like new. I replaced every stinking o-ring using Redeye's carb o-ring kit and put in #38 slow jets. I did make the decision to replace all of the carb insulators and I am glad I did so. The old carb insulators were rock hard and I noticed when I put it all back together that the tubes between the airbox and carbs actually fit up against the carbs. I am not sure if it was the new insulators or the fact that I removed all the smog equipment that made everything finally fit up right.

After syncing the carbs I took the old gal for a ride. Holy smokes...that thing really ran well. I couldn't believe the difference in how it ran. I gave my ultrasonic cleaner a real workout, but now that it is done, it was well worth it. It really feels like a new bike. I am not sure if the cleaning or replacing of the o-rings made a bigger difference. But when I put it back together, my carbs were really out of sync. It was not that long ago when I had them all set dead on so I am thinking those carb o-rings were shot.

If you are considering doing this, it is a lot of work. Be prepared for difficulty in separating the carbs. But when it is all done, you will be glad you took the time to do it. ( I would suggest ordering the two aluminum fuel tubes. Both of mine were corroded on one end and I wound up using SimiChrome polish to smooth out some of the corroded area to accept the new o-rings.)
