Just when I thought I was getting it all together....my son and I took a ride on our bikes to a local state park. We stopped near the house to fuel up before we left for the state park. Fueled up and we each rode our bikes headed for Petit Jean State Park. When we got to the state park, I pulled in at a place for us to stop and see some sites and walk around a bit. This is when I discovered that my ignition key was GONE....MISSING.....not to be found. Needless to say that we jumped back on the road headed for home. Pulled into the shop at the house and used a screw driver to turn the Valk off. Went and had 3 keys made at our local Honda dealership (55 miles away....one way).

My question is WHY would the key fall out of a running down the highway motorcycle?
Inquiring minds wanna know.  ???

If the key can fall out after you have turned it on, your ignition switch has gone south.

Well, the interesting thing about this is......The new keys I had made....will NOT jiggle or pull out of the ignition switch when turned to the run position.
My son's VT1100....we had the same exact thing happen and had to go have keys made for his bike. This happened on my son's bike about 2 years ago. Same thing, new keys will NOT jiggle or pull out of the ignition...just like the new keys made for my Valk.

I have an ignition switch that will no hold a key in once it is turned on, I hadn't thought about a worn key. Glad it's the key, not the switch.

Do not load up a bike key (chain) with a bunch of other gobbledygook to blow around in the wind and work on the lock tumblers.

It's really the the "Gobbledygook that really messes it up.  cooldude

That's one of the first things drilled into my head when I started flying. Keep all the extra crap in your pocket, not on the key ring because it will eventually wear the tumblers and you run the chance of shutting off the ignition in mid-flight. My bike key is a single item with a small leather thong attached to it. And when I take a ride other than local errands, I ALWAYS take an extra key stuck in my other jeans pocket.  cooldude

I was always wondering what that metallic noise was on my bike every time I took a RH turn. Turned out to be all those extra keys swinging into the engine (metal-on-metal noise).

That is why I have my ignition key on a single key chain, and a spare key on my regular key chain with all my other keys. Gives me that spare when I'm out ridding, and incase I need to get something from the bike while I walk past it from the car to the house.

I have seen this before at our dealership. The key was so worn that it comes out in the run position.
Now with the FOBS, all we worry about are the dead batteries in them!

All  my key has on it is an old Gold Wing radio knob that has the little park of the key siliconed in.

I carry another key in my pocket so as to open the gas door or the saddlebags back when I had them.  Actually those keys are on a snap hooked to my belt loop.

I don't think the key has been out of the switch since I did this mod in California at a Ride-In.     Dennis, who is now a Arizona Law Enforcer actually did it.   I think he works at the weight station at the state line.      He has been there like 15 years now.

Mine will come out.  New key.  I just attached a small nut to the  leather thong and have a magnet stuck to the right hand rear motor mount bolt.  Looks like it belongs there.  Isn't going anywhere now.

I DID order an ignition switch with the other locks...  Still waiting...  That was a year ago.

Sure hope you never paid for that switch up front.

I'd try somewhere else for that switch.

With the lock in such a condition is it possible to still

turn it "on" and "off" without the key?   If you park

the bike in a secure area, like a garage, all the other

times a lock isn't necessary anyway - Nobody will

steal a Valkyrie. There's probably less than 1 bike

stolen each year.  If you ever notice, most Harley riders

neglect to lock their bikes under normal riding.

Agree, but having your key fall out and blow away is not good.

The electrical outlets in my house were so old and worn, the cords would fall out of the wall of their own weight.  I changed every one.  I only got lit up once.  Good thing I was grounded to a concrete floor (and already sitting down).   crazy2

My fault for ordering all the locks at the same time.  Thinking I'd get a set.  I doubt that, and yeah, I paid.  You have to pay for Honda parts up front.  Haven't ping'ed them for awhile, I'll d that today.

Posts like this always make one run out and check their own Valk(s).  My key only moves 1/16" when I pull with a little force.  I do not want to pull hard because I know what may happen.  Many years ago I let a friend drive my '69 Camaro SS.  While parking it, he yanked out the key because I failed to tell him about the interlock that required the 4-speed transmission to be in reverse.  From that point on, I could remove the key while the engine was running.  I considered it a handy feature, not a problem.
